Three Classic Chopard Watches to Consider

by Cait Bazemore

Chopard is one of the premier watch brands for both men and women, known for their watchmaking prowess, stunning gem-setting and ethical approach to luxury. Whether she is looking for a luxury sport watch with a balance of sophistication and versatility or he is seeking a vintage-inspired model with a balance of heritage and contemporary elements, Chopard offers a diverse range of timepieces. In the past year, we have seen updates to a number of the brand’s iconic collections, including the Happy Sport, Happy Sport Oval, and Mille Miglia. These designs reflect the attention to detail and refined proportions one can expect from Chopard.

Happy Sport

Chopard first debuted the Happy Sport collection more than 25 years ago, in 1993. The design is the brainchild of Caroline Scheufele, who now serves as the Co-President and Artistic Director of the brand. She had a vision for a luxury sport watch that combined a utilitarian stainless steel design with the feminine touch of precious stones, and the Happy Sport was born. Over the years, the line has evolved and expanded as a reflection of the brand’s boundless creativity (as well as creating a 40th Anniversary Commemorative Edition)

The modern collection is comprised of timeless, 30mm round and oval watches. A hallmark of the Happy Sport is the textured mother of pearl dial – a signature material for Chopard. Inside, the models house the Maison’s in-house Calibre 09.01-C self-winding mechanical movement with a 42-hour power reserve.

Chopard also offers the round and oval variations of the Happy Sport in two different style options. Both feature a sleek white alligator strap as well as a stunning case design. The case combines both 18-karat rose gold and stainless steel for a rich two-tone construction. The interweaving of these two materials perfectly highlights the unique wave pattern of the mother of pearl dial and five dancing diamonds situated between the two sapphire crystals. The two iterations are set apart by the choice of additional diamond accents on the bezel.

Happy Sport Oval

In addition to the classic Happy Sport collection, Chopard presents the Happy Sport Oval with some one-of-a-kind features. One of the most notable design elements of the original 1993 Happy Sport model was the fashionable and functional pebble bracelet. This year, we see the return of this iconic attribute in the latest Happy Sport Oval models. This element truly embodies the versatile spirit of the luxury sport watch with the perfect harmony of utility and elegance. The finely interwoven pebbled links that make up the bracelet are crafted entirely in-house by artisans at the Maison. Its construction is highly polished and supple allowing it to seamlessly curve to the contours of the wrist. The result is a look and feel that is comfortable without sacrificing style.

Aside from the bracelet, the Happy Sport Oval models are quite similar to the original Happy Sport. Chopard offers variations in stainless steel, rose gold, and two-tone. It is worth noting the brand has announced its commitment to fair-mined, fair-traded, ethical gold, as seen in these special models. Like the traditional Happy Sport, the Happy Sport Oval showcases five dancing diamonds situated between the two sapphire crystals and is available with additional diamond accents on the bezel. Lastly, the models in the Happy Sport Oval collection house the same in-house Calibre 09.01-C self-winding mechanical movement with a 42-hour power reserve.

Mille Miglia

Chopard has not forgotten its loyal male clients. They have created an equally handsome offering in the form of the latest addition to the Mille Miglia collection. In 2018, the brand celebrated three decades of work with the illustrious Italian motorsport race. This year, Chopard continues to celebrate this fruitful partnership with the newest model in the namesake collection: the Mille Miglia 2019 Race Edition.

This limited edition model is available in stainless steel (1000 pieces) and two-tone stainless steel and 18-karat rose gold (250 pieces). Both iterations of the Race Edition feature a robust design with a 44mm case and water resistance up to 100 metres. The dial showcases two chronograph registers along the vertical axis. In addition, a small seconds register and a magnified date window sit along the horizontal axis. Finally, the hands and hour markers are coated with Super-LumiNova®. Chopard has carefully designed and color-coded each element of the dial for maximum legibility in all conditions.

Surrounding the dial is a tachymeter bezel, perfect for calculating average speeds during the race. In addition, each caseback features the distinctive Mille Miglia logo on a black PVD-treated checkerboard pattern as a nod to the race commissioner’s flag. Last but not least, the 2019 Race Edition features a dashing camel leather strap with tonal stitching. Inside, the strap is lined with Dunlop 1960s tyre-tread motif for a subtle vintage touch. The models are equally adept on the interior. They come equipped with a self-winding, COSC-certified chronograph movement boasting a 48-hour power reserve.
