Hublot’s collaboration with Jeff Koons brings together two practices built around material, reflection, and altered perception. Unveiled alongside the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog, the MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons takes a more mechanically ambitious route, using cosmic creation as the organising principle for a new central tourbillon architecture. The result joins Hublot’s MP series of experimental watches and introduces the manufacture’s first automatic central tourbillon.


The premise is unusually literal. Rather than placing a conventional display above a movement, Hublot has arranged the watch concentrically, beginning with the tourbillon at its centre and building the indications outwards in a succession of rings. Koons’ contribution is similarly structural rather than decorative. References to his work appear in the use of reflected light, transparency, suspended forms, and, most visibly, a blue sapphire dome derived from his Gazing Ball series. Together, these elements turn the dial into a system of moving layers whose geometry follows the idea of expansion from a single point.

THE FIRST PULSE

The MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons centres on Hublot’s new HUB9014 manufacture calibre. Its automatic tourbillon occupies the middle of the movement rather than the more familiar peripheral positions at six or nine o’clock. A peripheral oscillating weight winds the calibre from around its outer edge, leaving the centre unobstructed and allowing the remainder of the display to develop around the regulating organ. The 594-component movement operates at 3 Hz, or 21,600 vph, and provides a 60-hour power reserve.


This arrangement is essential to the watch’s visual logic. The tourbillon sits beneath a transparent sapphire dome coated by hand with translucent blue varnish. The form refers to Koons’ Gazing Ball works, in which highly reflective blue spheres alter the viewer’s perception of their surroundings. Here, the dome partially obscures the mechanism below while drawing attention towards the exact centre of the watch. Hublot describes that point as the system’s first pulse, from which the surrounding architecture appears to radiate.


That central position also required the Manufacture to rethink the winding system. A conventional centrally mounted rotor would interfere with both the tourbillon and the open construction, so the HUB9014 instead places its oscillating mass around the movement’s perimeter. The technical solution simultaneously creates the visual space required by Koons’ concept, making the movement architecture and artistic premise dependent on one another rather than merely layered together.

Hours and minutes are indicated through a system of concentric rings rather than conventional hands. Two suspended rotating rings carry small indicator cubes: polished stainless steel finished with translucent red varnish for the hours, and polished stainless steel for the minutes. Their movement around the dial gives the indications the appearance of objects travelling through an orbital system.


Two further rings remain fixed. Blue sapphires on the minute ring mark the quarters, while those on the hour ring indicate the hours. Across the four rings are 202 stones totalling approximately 2.3 carats, combining baguette-cut diamonds with blue sapphires.

The approach avoids separating legibility from construction. The same rings responsible for displaying time also establish the depth of the dial, drawing the eye progressively from the edge of the case towards the tourbillon beneath the blue dome. The indications therefore form part of the architecture rather than sitting on top of it.

The movement is housed inside a 44 mm octagonal case constructed from sapphire and titanium. According to Hublot, machining the transparent sapphire case requires approximately 534 hours. Titanium is used for the case back, screws, and the familiar lateral elements positioned at three and nine o’clock.


Sapphire has occupied an increasingly structural role within Hublot’s watchmaking since the introduction of the Big Bang Unico Sapphire in 2016. The manufacture subsequently developed coloured translucent sapphire and more involved case constructions before extending its use into gem-set architectures. On the MP-14, transparency is central to the design because the case allows the multiple levels of the movement and display to remain visible from almost every angle.

That idea continues into the integrated bracelet, which is also made from sapphire and joined using titanium screws. The transition from the case into the bracelet maintains the same transparent construction rather than placing the movement inside an isolated sapphire enclosure.


Despite the complexity of the exterior, Hublot has also concealed the watch’s principal setting functions. Winding is accessed at the point engraved “ENERGY PULSE”, while the time-setting system is identified by “COSMIC ALIGN”, keeping a conventional crown from interrupting the case profile.

The collaboration extends beyond the visual references to Koons’ art. The MP-14 designation also connects to an early point in the artist’s career. In 1980, Koons held his first solo exhibition at the New Museum in New York, then located at 65 5th Avenue at 14th Street. The number therefore links the watch to the same year in which Hublot itself was founded, creating a parallel between two careers that began developing their respective approaches to materials and familiar forms at around the same moment.


Koons is known for works including Balloon Dog, Rabbit, and Puppy, often taking recognisable objects and changing their scale, material, and surface until their relationship with the viewer shifts. Highly polished finishes and reflection recur throughout his practice. In the MP-14, those ideas appear through sapphire, diamonds, blue sapphires, polished metal, and the blue central dome rather than through a miniature reproduction of one of his sculptures.

A MOVEMENT BUILT AROUND THE IDEA


The MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons works because its concept is carried by the movement rather than applied around it. The central automatic tourbillon determines the organisation of the display; the peripheral winding system preserves the open architecture; the rings make the indication of time part of the composition; and the sapphire case allows the construction to be read in depth.


That relationship between concept and mechanics also reflects The Hour Glass writing principle of describing an achievement through what has actually been built rather than relying on broad declarations. With 594 movement components arranged around Hublot’s first automatic central tourbillon, the MP-14 provides plenty of substance to examine. Its most interesting achievement is therefore not simply its visual resemblance to an expanding universe, but the amount of mechanical rearrangement required to make that idea function on the wrist.
