The first and latest collaboration by Hublot with Jeff Koons begins with a familiar form. The American artist’s Balloon Dog, created between 1994 and 2000 as part of his Celebration series, takes the fleeting geometry of a balloon animal and fixes it in mirror-polished, industrially precise form. For the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons, that same visual language has been applied to a watch, requiring Hublot to reconsider the architecture of the Classic Fusion rather than simply place Koons’ imagery onto an existing design.
The result is a 42 mm Classic Fusion whose surfaces appear to have been inflated from within. Case, dial, crystal, screws, crown, strap, and even elements of the movement have been reshaped around soft curves and convex profiles, translating the tension and rounded volume of Koons’ sculpture into metal, sapphire, rubber, and leather. The collaboration is offered in three interpretations: mirror-polished stainless steel, red anodised aluminium, and blue anodised aluminium.
