L'EPÉE 1839 PUTS TIME INTO PLAY WITH THE FOOTBALL

There are few objects whose geometry is as immediately recognisable as a football. L’Epée 1839 takes that familiar 32-panel sphere and reconstructs it as The Football, a full-scale mechanical sculpture measuring 220 mm in diameter and built from 882 components. Inside, an eight-day mechanical movement occupies the space normally hidden beneath leather and stitching, turning the ball’s pentagons and hexagons into the framework for displaying time.


The starting point is not merely the appearance of the game, but its relationship with time. A football match is organised around two halves, added minutes, recurring seasons, and competitions, while everything that happens within those boundaries remains uncertain until it happens. L’Epée 1839 draws a parallel with mechanical horology: the mechanism may be calculated, assembled, and regulated with precision, but what those measured hours eventually contain cannot be prescribed.

The Football takes its structure from the classic 32-panel ball, made from 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons. The configuration became one of football’s enduring visual signatures after the Telstar appeared at the 1970 World Cup, where its contrasting geometry served both an engineering purpose and improved the ball’s visibility on television.


Here, those panels become a mechanical exoskeleton. Pentagonal and hexagonal elements are arranged around the movement and held together by visible screws, leaving much of the interior exposed. Light passes through the sphere from different directions, revealing the movement, gear trains, and escapement rather than concealing them behind a conventional housing. Hand-polished elements of the exterior reflect the light, while the satin-brushed discs used for the time display provide a quieter visual contrast.


The openness of the construction also changes the way the object is viewed. Rather than presenting a single front-facing display, the sphere invites inspection from several angles, with different components becoming visible as the sculpture is rotated on its wooden base.

Eight Days At The Centre

The mechanical centre of The Football is an in-house L’Epée 1839 movement with an eight-day power reserve. It is manually wound, runs at 18,000 vibrations per hour, or 2.5 Hz, and incorporates 11 jewels and an Incabloc shock-protection system. The movement and the surrounding structure together account for the sculpture’s 882 components.


Its escapement remains visible within the sphere, providing a constant point of movement amongst the static geometry of the panels. L’Epée describes it in relation to the motion of a ball during play: the mechanism supplies the rhythm that keeps the entire construction alive, while the surrounding gear trains make that mechanical activity visible.

Reading the time has also been incorporated directly into the shape of the ball. Hours and minutes appear on two rotating satin-finished discs that follow the curvature of the sphere. Their numerals are viewed through two separate hexagonal apertures, allowing the familiar panel structure to serve as part of the display itself rather than functioning simply as an outer shell.


A dedicated key positioned at the top of the sculpture is used for both winding and time-setting. The movement is finished with satin-finished hours and minutes discs alongside polished gears and plates, while the wider construction employs stainless steel and brass with palladium- or gold-plated elements depending on the configuration. Polishing, satin-finishing, and sandblasting are used across the different surfaces.

Built Like A Team

The sporting analogy extends to the way The Football is made. Its construction brings together several specialised métiers within L’Epée 1839, from technical development and component production to hand-finishing and final assembly. Each part performs an individual function, but the sculpture only works once those separate disciplines have been brought together.


At 4.2 kg, The Football is substantial enough to retain the physical presence of the object on which it is based. It rests on a wooden stand and can be positioned at different angles, exposing different sections of the movement, time display, and exterior architecture as it is turned.


Four configurations approach that architecture differently: Full Gold-Plated, Full Palladium-Plated, Two-Tone with Black Numerals, and Two-Tone with Gold Numerals. The underlying construction remains the same, with each version using the contrast between the exoskeleton, rotating discs, and visible mechanism to give the sphere its character.


Football measures its own kind of time. Ninety minutes may define a match, while seasons, finals, and careers accumulate over much longer periods. L’Epée 1839 uses The Football to make that relationship mechanical: a familiar sphere rebuilt around an eight-day movement, with the passage of hours made visible through the very geometry that has come to represent the game.
