5 Things To Know About Hublot’s UNICO Movement
Beyond revolutionary complications and cutting-edge materials, one of Hublot’s proudest achievements is the creation of its entirely in-house developed and manufactured base caliber, the UNICO.
Here are five things that make it for more than just a “workhorse” movement.
Flyback 60-Minute Chronograph
The UNICO chronograph features a flyback function, allowing the chronograph to instantly jump back to zero and (think of counting individual laps in a single race). Interestingly, the chronograph mechanism’s column-wheel is placed on the dial side of the movement, something of a rarity in haute horlogerie. Also noteworthy is that the chronograph’s minutes register measures 60 minutes instead of the more common and traditional 30-minute counter.
Modular Escapement
Conceived with swift customer service in mind, the UNICO movement features an interchangeable escapement module, allowing it to be removed, adjusted and/or replaced without having to disassemble the rest of the movement. It also features a silicium (silicon) escape wheel and pallet fork that require no lubrication.
Bi-Directional Winding
To offer a more efficient winding system, the UNICO’s central rotor is able to wind the mainspring when turned in both clockwise and anti-clockwise. When fully wound the movement delivers a power reserve of 72 hours.
Optimal Lubrication
Hublot uses a high-tech auto-lubrication machine that is pre-programmed to apply precise amounts of lubricating oil, ensuring that just the right amount of oil is applied for the movement’s longevity and smooth operation.
Adaptable
The real beauty of the UNICO base movement is that it can be fitted with an ever-increasing number of Hublot’s complications, including a GMTor worldtime, bi-retrograde chronograph and even a perpetual calendar.
You can find the UNICO movement in a number of Hublot collections including King Power, Big Bang UNICO, and the Official Ferrari Watch collection, the Big Bang Ferrari.
