Introduced during Watches and Wonders 2025, the Calatrava Ref. 5328G-001 brings an 8-day manually wound movement into focus — a practical and deliberate addition to Patek Philippe’s calendar-equipped offerings. Rather than leaning into spectacle, this model leans into clarity, rhythm, and enduring utility.

The watch carries forward a line of thinking seen in previous long-power-reserve models from the Manufacture. What sets this version apart is its vertical display layout, which anchors the design while creating space for a new movement architecture. A day aperture sits just above 6 o’clock, paired with a sweeping date hand within the same subdial. At the opposite end, an arched power reserve display — marked clearly and legibly — adds both function and visual symmetry.

The white gold case measures 41mm in diameter and features a full hobnail guilloché motif around the caseband. This decorative technique — referred to as Clous de Paris — has long been associated with the Calatrava collection, offering tactility and detail without drawing attention away from the dial. From the side, the lugs taper gently, ensuring the watch sits flat on the wrist.

The dial presents a textured blue finish with a black-gradient rim. It’s subtly executed, with white gold applied numerals and syringe-shaped hands filled with luminescent material, offering excellent legibility in low light. The use of a vertical axis for the main indications is a subtle departure from typical calendar layouts, giving this model a more architectural, measured feel.

Powering the watch is the calibre 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J — a manually wound movement developed specifically for this configuration. Two series-coupled barrels provide a full eight days of autonomy, with a ninth day displayed in red on the reserve indicator. The escapement incorporates Patek Philippe’s proprietary Pulsomax® system, contributing to stable performance across the full energy range. Viewed through the sapphire caseback, the movement reveals a considered balance between traditional finishing.

The watch comes fitted with a navy blue calfskin strap in a textile motif, secured by a triple-blade white gold clasp — newly patented this year. A second strap in grained taupe calfskin is also supplied, providing a more casual option. Both attach without tools, enabling easy transitions between settings.
The Ref. 5328G-001 doesn’t reach for attention, but it holds its own through clarity and execution. The gradient blue dial adds depth, while the hobnail guilloché around the caseband brings a subtle link to the Calatrava’s past. With an 8-day power reserve and clean, legible layout, it’s built for function—yet there’s an abundance of texture and detail to keep it engaging over time.
