The Hour Glass Watch Profiles – Audrey Hepburn

Style Icons

Time doesn’t stop. We can’t reverse it. So why do we keep looking back? And in this age of celebrity why do we (and why should we) care about what watches celebrities wore in their heyday. Be it Audrey Hepburn, Steve McQueen or Paul Newman.

Audrey Hepburn starring in the 1953 film, Roman Holiday

Perhaps it’s nostalgia, the first time you saw an Omega Seamaster. Seeing it first on the wrist of Pearce Brosnan in GoldenEye. Or was it that historically in-accurate Cartier Tank strapped to the wrist of Rudolph Valentino in The Son of The Sheik, a 1926 film set in 19th century Algiers. Whatever the reason, it’s interesting to ponder what watches these icons would’ve worn if they were living today. Having recently launched our Cartier Collectors Guide, it seemed appropriate to start with Audrey Hepburn. Although not synonymous with a particular watch, she’s known the world over for her elegance and poise. And the fact that Audrey isn’t so widely associated with watches , makes it all the more interesting. Below we feature a range of watches which we feel would look at home on the wrist of Audrey Hepburn if she was an actor in Hollywood today.

Longines DolceVita

Reference. L5.755.0.57.6

Known for wearing her Dolce Vita, Longines has since incorporated Audrey Hepburn into their advertisements. It’s a natural fit and her style resonates with the brands motto “Elegance is an attitude”. Both the Dolce Vita and Audrey Hepburn exude classical elegance. With a black lacquer dial, diamond bezel and powered by Longines L176 Quartz Movement, the DolceVita Reference. L5.755.0.57.6 is the perfect mix of refined luxury and practicality. It’s a watch that wouldn’t look out of place on her wrist, both on and off the red carpet. Inspired by the Italian “Dolce Vita” way of life, it’s a fitting choice for the star of the 1953 film, Roman Holiday.

Ronde Louis Cartier

Ref: WR000551

Around 1937 Louis Cartier himself designed the Louis Cartier Ronde. Although different models of this watch have been created over the years the majority of them are fitted with blued Breguet numerals and have on the guilloche dial two rows with numerals; on the outside of the dial Roman numerals indicating the numbers one through twelve and on the inside the post- morning numbers thirteen to twenty four in Arabic numerals. Despite being a very classical watch, its contemporary sized 36mm diameter case prevents this watch from becoming too traditional. The Ronde Louis Cartier, like Audrey Hepburn, manages to achieve an aesthetic balance. It’s neither subtle nor ostentatious. Its silvered grain dial and apple-shaped blued steel hands warrant a closer look.

Piaget LimeLight Gala

Reference: G0A38160

Piaget describes the Limelight Gala as “radiant, spirited and seductive”. All Limelight Gala watches feature elongated horns, which accentuate the curves of the watch and blur the line between watch case and watch strap. This 32 mm 62 diamond set bezel Gala is thoroughly contemporary. It’s slender Roman numerals in tandem with the elongated horns counter the curved circular dial and bezel, providing a harmonious balance of angles and curves.

Omega De Ville Trésor

Reference: 428.17.39.60.01.001

The Trésor collection follows a long tradition of exquisite women’s watches watches from Omega. These models, however, have been created with a new generation in mind. A total of 9 different models are available within the collection. This includes cases made in stainless steel or 18K Sedna™ gold. A diverse range of dial colours are also available – including taupe-brown, mother-of-pearl or lacquered black, white, blue and opaline silver. The slim 39 mm case is made from stainless steel and features diamond paving that curves along each side, as well as a crown that is polished with red “HyCeram” and set with a single diamond. Onto the lacquered black dial, the Trésor features slender transferred Roman numerals and rhodium-plated hands.
