Watches of Switzerland is proud to introduce Citizen to its stable of brands. To celebrate, the new Citizen Caliber 0200 will be available exclusively at Watches of Switzerland NEX boutique in Singapore.

Founded in 1918 as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute by Yamazaki Kamekichi, with a vision of making watches (then a luxury product) affordable for ordinary people. The company name Citizen came about not long after, suggested by the Goto Shinpei, Mayor of Tokyo and a friend of the founder, to signify that dream of high-quality watches that every citizen can afford. In 1924, Citizen launched their first pocket watch produced in Japan, and the one of first pieces was presented to Emperor Taisho of Japan. Reportedly, the Emperor was said to remark at how pleased he was that Japan was capable of producing watches of its own, and that he wrote a letter to Shokosha Institute, praising the watch’s quality and precision.

Focussing on creating new technologies, Citizen has become a leading innovator in precision and technical watches. In 1959, Citizen produced the first Japanese waterproof watch, the Parawater, which kickstarted its collection of diving watches, as well as the innovative spirit that now defines the brand.

Calibre 0200

Launched in 2021, the Calibre 0200 marked a pivotal point for Citizen. This mechanical piece with the brand-new Cal. 0200 was the result of Japanese mechanical design and assembly expertise with Swiss movement and finishing prowess.

The exterior design of the Caliber 0200 takes cues from the avant-garde looks of Citizen’s catalogue from the 1970s. With large facets, the angular design is distinctive and unique. The contrast of polished surfaces against the overall brushed finish adds brilliance without detracting from the tool-watch look.

Inside, the movement bears the hallmarks of Swiss construction, with its large bridges and small seconds. To achieve the high standards of timekeeping accuracy sought by Citizen, the Cal. 0200 features the brand’s first free-sprung balance wheel. This was made possible by revising the machining process of parts to the required precision and reflects Citizen’s core philosophy of watchmaking precision coming from the mechanical precision of its parts.
