Reaching For The Sun – Hublot Unveils Yellow Sapphire

by Luke Carlino

Geneva Days 2019: Hublot reaches for the Sun with the Spirit of Big Bang Yellow Sapphire 42 mm

Hublot has continued to innovate in sapphire by unveiling a series of yellow sapphire Spirit of the Big Bang watches. Joining a line-up that includes smoked black, blue and red coloured sapphire. Its luminous translucent appearance is particularly effective at highlighting the complex architecture of the self-winding skeleton chronograph movement housed within.

Sultans of Sapphire

Back in 2016, Hublot began their journey with sapphire, embracing its transparency and resistance. A year later, they pushed further with various coloured sapphires extending the use of the material to the Big Bang Unico, the Spirit of Big Bang and the MP-05 LaFerrari. But why yellow this time around?

Hublot felt it was time for a new primary colour and have made a historical first for watchmaking which has never before seen sapphire in yellow.

 Modern Comfort

As hard and scratch-resistant as diamond while also being extremely light, the combination of these elements with a natural rubber strap (also in yellow) makes for a very comfortable watch. Hublot pushes forward with their rubber straps, a popular choice for modern watches, this time in structured lined yellow rubber with a black-plated titanium deployant buckle clasp to break up the brightness.

For Hublot, the fascination with rubber is in line with their “Art of Fusion” ethos. It makes sense considering Hublot was designed as a luxury sports watch brand with a focus on water sports. The rubber, which doesn’t decompose over time like a traditional leather strap, has proven successful for the brand time and time again.

Reaching For The Sun

The polished yellow sapphire crystal case is styled with a sapphire crystal dial and is water resistant to a depth of 50 metres. Limited to 100 pieces, the Spirit of Big Bang Yellow Sapphire houses the self-winding skeleton chronograph movement, entirely “Hublotised” in its architecture and its finishing, from the legendary Zenith El Primero calibre.

Final Thoughts

If you like to have a pop of colour in your casual outfits, the Spirit of Big Bang Yellow Sapphire is the watch for you. While you might be a little hard-pressed to pair it with ‘formal’ attire, it’s perfect for the trip to the beach on a summer’s day. When you think about it, it’s essentially a homage to that exact scenario!
