Mechanical Exception: Exploring Hublot’s MP Series
Under the “MP” moniker, short for “masterpiece”, Hublot has been steadily introducing some of the wildest watch concepts we’ve seen in modern times. Here’s a quick look at some of the most noteworthy MP creations to date:
MP-01
Hublot’s first departure from the brand’s signature round porthole form, the MP-01 ushered a new era for Hublot where the Art of Fusion can be expressed in the most groundbreaking fashion.
The MP-01 features a tonneau-shaped case with a tonneau-shaped movement that actually follows the curves of the case back, meaning that many of the bridges and gears are inclined at a slightly slanted angle. And not just any movement, the MP-01 is fitted with the HUB5100 mono-pusher column-wheel chronograph caliber, entirely conceived and manufactured in Hublot’s High Complications department.
MP-02 “Key of Time”
What if you could precious moments with a loved one last for hours tedious meetings only a few short minutes?
Arguably Hublot’s most poetic timepiece to date, the MP-02 “Key of Time” is the closest us mere mortals will get to bending time to our will. Equipped with a unique mechanism, the MP-02 allows the wearer to adjust the speed of time to go four times faster or four times slower than the actual rate time passes. And to snap back to reality, the Key of Time boasts “mechanical memory” that allows the hands to jump back to the correct time regardless of how long the wearer has been time-traveling.
MP-05 “LaFerrari”
Quite literally a racing machine for the wrist, Hublot’s highly acclaimed MP-05 LaFerrari bears all the makings of a high-performance engine. Inspired by the hybrid Ferrari supercar, the LaFerrari wristwatch is an unprecedented construction, with an unusual horizontally mounted movement with time indicated on drums. It features no less than 11 series-coupled barrels to deliver an astonishing power reserve of 50 days, a world record. And it’s also equipped with a vertical tourbillon, visible through the porthole at six o’clock.
MP-08 “Antikythera Sun Moon”
A tribute to one of the most complex and mysterious machines of Greek antiquity, the MP-08 pays tribute to the Antikythera mechanism, believed to have been built around 150BC, sometimes referred to as the first analog computer ever made.
The MP-08 hosts a number of complications found in the ancient Antikythera mechanism, including both solar and lunar calendars as well as the relative position of the sun and moon in the night sky as well as the shape of the moon in the sky, the name of the constellation behind the Moon, as well as the time required for the Moon to pass through a constellation. The watch also shows the constellation located behind the Sun and the time required for the Sun to pass through a constellation. Any way you look at it, the MP-08 Antikythera Sun Moon is a modern mechanical marvel of astronomical proportions.
