The URWERK UR-150 GOLDEN SCORPION PUTS YELLOW GOLD IN MOTION

The UR-150 Golden Scorpion places yellow gold around one of URWERK’s most kinetic displays. The established architecture of the UR-150 remains intact, but its 2N yellow gold case middle and crown alter the way its sweeping surfaces, abrupt changes in geometry, and exposed mechanics register on the wrist. Against the predominantly black display, the material does more than change the colour of the watch. It draws attention to the shape of the case and to the movement taking place within it.


For URWERK, this is an unusual meeting of material and mechanism. Yellow gold carries longstanding associations with traditional watchmaking, while the UR-150 approaches the indication of time through rotating satellites, a flying carousel, and retrograde minutes. The Golden Scorpion sets those ideas beside one another, using one of watchmaking’s most familiar precious metals to frame a display conceived around continual movement.


It also continues an idea that has shaped URWERK since 1997: that the familiar arrangement of centrally mounted hour and minute hands is not the only way to make elapsed time immediately understandable. The UR-150 places motion at the centre of that proposition. Its indications continually change position, turning the passage of each hour into a mechanical sequence visible from the dial side.

A Different Reading of Time

Three hour satellites rotate on a central flying carousel. As the relevant satellite enters position, a large retrograde hand carries the minutes across a 240-degree arc surrounding the lower portion of the display. At the conclusion of the hour, the hand returns to its starting position in one hundredth of a second before beginning the sequence again.


The resulting display has two distinct forms of motion operating together. The satellites progress around the centre of the watch, while the minute hand moves through its arc before making its rapid return. Reading the UR-150 therefore involves following where the current hour has travelled and where the minute hand sits along its scale, rather than consulting two conventional hands sharing the same axis.


That relationship is particularly apparent on the Golden Scorpion. Black satellite modules and the dark surrounding architecture establish the backdrop, while the yellow gold case creates a brighter perimeter around the mechanism. Gold-coloured elements within the display further connect the exterior to the movement beneath the crystal, allowing the material treatment to extend beyond the case itself.

The case retains the established form of the UR-150, with broad curves broken by more sharply defined changes in surface. Its 2N yellow gold case middle is sandblasted, microbead-blasted, and satin-finished across the upper surface and flanks. The matching crown receives sandblasted and satin finishing. These treatments moderate the reflectivity associated with polished gold and allow individual planes of the case to respond differently as the angle of the watch changes.


Martin Frei, URWERK co-founder and Chief Designer, describes the watch as an object whose appearance is intended to change with light, angle, and the movement of the wrist. For the Golden Scorpion, he regards yellow gold almost as an optical material: certain lines become more apparent while others recede according to the position from which the case is viewed. The watch remains physically unchanged, but the relationship between its curves, edges, and surfaces continues to shift.

The Mechanics Behind the Motion

The choreography is driven by the self-winding UR-50.01 calibre. Running at 4 Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement uses 38 jewels and provides a power reserve of 43 hours. It was developed to manage both the satellite indication and the retrograde minute display, including the unusually rapid return that takes place at the completion of every hour.


Central to this operation is a cam-and-rack system coupled with a speed regulator of a type more commonly associated with minute repeaters. In the UR-150, the arrangement replaces a conventional Maltese cross mechanism. It synchronises the progression of the satellites with the return of the retrograde hand, controlling the transition from the end of one hour to the beginning of the next.


The mechanical contrast is part of what gives the UR-150 its character. For most of each hour, the indication advances progressively. Reaching the end of the minute scale triggers a very different action as the hand snaps back across the display in one hundredth of a second. The system must therefore accommodate both the measured passage of the indication and the energy involved in its near-instantaneous return.


Felix Baumgartner, URWERK co-founder and master watchmaker, connects that behaviour directly to the Golden Scorpion name. He describes the UR-150 as appearing alert and ready to strike, an idea expressed through the tension between the trajectory of the satellites and the sudden return of the retrograde hand. The name consequently has a mechanical reference as well as a visual one: the hand advances through its arc before rapidly returning to begin another cycle.

Built Around the Display

The materials of the UR-50.01 have been selected around the moving indication. The satellite hours are made from aluminium, while the flying carousel is brass, finely sandblasted and microbead-blasted before receiving a 3N gold PVD coating. The retrograde hand is also aluminium, with sandblasted and satin-finished surfaces. Wheels within the mechanism are manufactured using LIGA technology.


On the reverse, the brass rotor is sandblasted and circular-grained, with a 3N gold PVD coating that continues the colour established on the dial side. Grade 5 titanium screw heads are flat-polished. The automatic movement is regulated by a double turbine system, another element incorporated into the UR-50.01 architecture.

Legibility remains closely tied to the construction of the display. Hour and minute markers, the flying carousel, and the counterweight are hand-painted with Super-LumiNova. The contrast between the white indications, black components, and gold-coloured elements makes each part of the system visually identifiable while allowing the path of the retrograde hand to remain prominent around its 240-degree scale.


The amount of visible movement also gives the display considerable depth. The satellites sit above the underlying architecture and move around the central carousel, while the retrograde hand crosses over them towards the minute track. Rather than concealing the mechanism responsible for the indication, the UR-150 makes its changing geometry a principal part of what is seen through the domed sapphire crystal.

Yellow Gold Around a Technical Architecture


The Golden Scorpion measures 42.50 mm wide, 51.00 mm long, and 14.80 mm thick. Its 2N yellow gold case middle is paired with the matching crown, while the caseback is constructed from Grade 5 titanium with a black PVD coating and sandblasted finish. A screw-down crown accompanies pressure resistance tested to 5 ATM. An adjustable high-performance hybrid rubber strap continues the contrast between the yellow gold case and the darker elements of the watch, and is secured by a folding clasp.


Within the vocabulary of conventional watchmaking, yellow gold has often been associated with continuity and permanence. URWERK applies it to an object whose appearance is continually changing. Light travels over the case as the wrist moves, the satellites circulate around the dial, and the retrograde hand repeatedly traverses its scale before returning to zero. The material may be traditional, but almost everything it surrounds is concerned with movement.


The UR-150 Golden Scorpion therefore leaves the underlying proposition of the UR-150 untouched. Its three satellite hours still orbit the central carousel, and its minute hand still travels through 240 degrees before returning in one hundredth of a second. Yellow gold changes the frame through which those mechanics are seen, placing greater emphasis on the surfaces, contours, and changing geometry of a watch built to make the passage of time visible through motion.
