GROUNDBREAKING COLLABORATION: URWERK AND ULYSSE NARDIN UNITE FOR THE URFREAK

Two of watchmaking's most innovative forces, URWERK and Ulysse Nardin, have decided to come together to create something truly different. Introducing the UR-FREAK, a special edition timekeeper that merges their distinct visions into a single remarkable creation. This collaboration marks the first time these Swiss watchmaking pioneers have worked together, resulting in a watch that pushes the boundaries of mechanical horology.

The Genesis of a Partnership

The UR-FREAK represents more than just another collaboration in the watch industry. It's a fusion of philosophies between two brands that have consistently challenged conventional thinking. URWERK, founded in 1997 by Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, built its reputation on creating conceptual mechanisms that expand the horizons of watchmaking. As for Ulysse Nardin, its roots stretch back to 1846 and has spent decades, particularly since the 1980s, championing technical innovation whilst respecting traditional craftsmanship .

This partnership harks back to the vibrant era of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when independent watchmakers were empowered by new technologies and materials. Computer-aided design software, advanced milling techniques, and novel materials opened doors that had remained firmly shut for decades within the traditional watch industry.

A Meeting of Minds

What makes this collaboration particularly significant is that it represents a true technical partnership rather than a cosmetic exercise. Unlike many collaborations that simply blend aesthetic elements, the UR-FREAK features an entirely new mechanical movement co-developed by both Manufactures. Based on the legendary Ulysse Nardin Freak concept, URWERK has applied its signature satellite display system, combining it with Ulysse Nardin's in-house silicon component mastery.

The result is a completely new system that has never been seen before, seamlessly integrating the technical DNA of both independent watchmakers whilst remaining true to their respective identities. For Ulysse Nardin, this marks their first collaboration with another watchmaking brand, having previously worked with personalities such as Dr. Ludwig Oechslin for decades.

Revolutionary Mechanics

At the heart of the UR-FREAK lies the new UN-241 Manufacture calibre. This automatic movement represents a remarkable feat of engineering, combining over 150 entirely new components to create a distinctive wandering hours satellite display alongside the watch's bezel design for time indication.

The system works through a series of connected hands. An active hand slides along a minute scale on the right side of the dial, each hand featuring a turning domed disc that functions as a jumping hour display. Once the current hour reaches the rotating carousel marker at the 60-minute mark, the hour disc changes and the next hour begins its journey. The entire wandering hours satellite system connects to the regulation system, with the Freak's rotating movement mechanism now integrated with URWERK's time display innovation.

At the centre sits a silicon-based balance wheel oscillating at 3Hz, offering a full 90 hours of power reserve. The oscillator, positioned centrally above the rotating hour satellites, is 25% larger than standard versions, maximising visual impact whilst saving space through thoughtful positioning.

Silicon: The Material of the Future

A key technological element of the UR-FREAK is its extensive use of silicon components. Ulysse Nardin pioneered silicon's use in mechanical watchmaking when it released the original Freak in 2001, introducing this revolutionary material before any other Manufacture. The brand's technical director at the time, Pierre Gygax, faced the considerable challenge of adapting manufacturing technology from computer microchips to mechanical movement components, working closely with Dr. Ludwig Oechslin.

The advantages of silicon are numerous. It is resistant to environmental changes such as temperature fluctuations and magnetic fields, which can cause serious problems for traditional metal components. Silicon also benefits from extremely low friction properties, enhancing efficiency and long-term performance. Parts can last for extended periods without requiring traditional lubrication, delaying service intervals and contributing to owner satisfaction.

Ulysse Nardin was so confident in silicon's capabilities that when the Freak launched in 2001, it boldly displayed its novelty on the dial. The brand later established its own micromechanical laboratory, Sigatec, in 2006, further cementing its commitment to silicon technology. The minute hand doubled as a visible gear train, with components such as the balance wheel and escapement produced from silicon. Over nearly 25 years and several thousand pieces later, the Freak has advanced considerably, with each iteration building upon the original concept.

The UR-FREAK utilises an oversized balance wheel and balance spring in silicon, alongside an escapement wheel and anchor in DIAMonSil, a proprietary material developed by Ulysse Nardin. DIAMonSil is silicon coated with diamond, adding a durable layer that protects against the material's brittle nature whilst maintaining its performance benefits.

The UR-FREAK's signature electric yellow Pantone 395 C can be spotted on the dial and rubber strap with its titanium case construction

The UR-FREAK's case measures 44 mm in diametre and it's crafted from deep anthracite grey sandblasted titanium. URWERK's design signatures are evident throughout, including three distinct fluted sections on the titanium turning bezel and caseback, and a hallmark design element of the brand. The titanium surface is accentuated by URWERK's emblematic electric yellow Pantone 395 C, a vibrant colour highlighting the satellite pointers, minute markers, and the bespoke fitted rubber strap.

In keeping with Ulysse Nardin's Freak collection tradition, the watch eschews a conventional crown. Instead, it employs both a turning bezel and caseback. A small tab on the case secures the bezel when not in use, featuring a "UR-FREAK" label for this special edition. When lifted, the bezel rotates freely, and upon closure, it adjusts the hands to set the time. The watch houses the Grinder-based automatic winding system, though the UN-241 movement can also be manually wound by turning the caseback. Despite the complex construction, the watch maintains 30 metres of water resistance.

The titanium case back is fitted with an open sapphire crystal, revealing the intricate mechanics within. Two integrated rubber straps are included: one in the signature yellow "ballistic" texture and one in black, both secured with a titanium sandblasted deployant buckle.

A Celebration of ARTISANAL Independence

This partnership between URWERK and Ulysse Nardin continues a strong legacy of collaboration and innovation. Together, they've created a unique piece that combines the best of both worlds to celebrate independence in watchmaking. The UR-FREAK stands as a testament to what's possible when two pioneering brands unite with complete creative freedom.
