Our Watch Specialists’ Picks

One week on from Watches & Wonders 2021, we ask our Watch Specialists to review one of their highlights from the digital presentations. From the time-only NOMOS Club in Future Orange to the cult classic A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar, we’ve rounded up a selection of highlights from ten of our Watch Specialists across the Asia-Pacific.

Should you have any questions about the watches featured below, drop us a line. We’d love to assist.

First up, Darryl, our General Manager in Hong Kong:

“Who said blue dials are dead? Inspired by the classic design of the ref. 3448, the all-new Patek Philippe ref. 5236P is a 41.3mm self-winding ‘in-line’ perpetual calendar in platinum. Once again, Patek Philippe is showing the world what it does best. A true masterpiece! Love that there’s a simple, symmetrical dial layout for such a complicated watch, with such classical proportions. And who doesn’t love a platinum Patek Philippe!”

F.P Journe’s yearly novelties are guaranteed to ignite the passion amongst watch collectors and enthusiasts, myself included.

20 years ago, Mr. Journe created the calibre 1300 for the Octa Réserve de Marche, it’s a revolutionary automatic movement that limits the loss in balance amplitude to 25% over 120 hours. In other words, it’s a very accurate watch movement with an exceptionally long power reserve. With this new limited anniversary release, F.P. Journe ticks all the boxes as a grail for any watch nerd. Brass movement? Tick. A unique dial? Tick. A special watch created for a special occasion by someone as special as Mr. Journe. Tick. What more could you ask for!”

Rachel, Business Performance Manager (Singapore)

“If you ask me, Hublot never fails to impress with their unfailing commitment to challenge the status quo, especially in the world of materials. Literally just 5 years after introducing sapphire timepieces in their collection and only 2 years since the launch of the Big Bang Integral, the manufacture has made the bold move to create the Big Bang Integral Tourbillon in full sapphire case and Integrated bracelet, and the result is really something special. This for me, is a stand-out piece from Watches & Wonders 2021. Now if only I had half a million dollars somewhere…”

Shimizu-san, Senior Sales Supervisor (Tokyo, Japan)

“One may think that the new A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar simply did away with the tourbillon from the existing Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar. However, that’s not the case.

The new movement is based on the Calibre L.021.1, used in the self-winding Lange 1 Daymatic, and features a new self-winding mechanism. Furthermore, it is equipped with a moon phase mechanism that has the same month display as the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar and the same day and night display as the Lange 1 Moon Phase. It is because of these subtle updates that the A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar stands out as one of my highlights from Watches & Wonders 2021.”

Moses, Boutique Manager (Singapore)

“To me Watches & Wonders is a platform for watch nerds to gather and to marvel at the biggest and baddest releases from the major watch brands. The Ulysse Nardin UFO – Unidentified Floating Object – from Watches & Wonders 2021, though not a watch, is most fitting for the wonders of what the horological world has to offer.

Ulysse Nardin continues to make waves, and in celebration of their 175th anniversary decided to unveil this mechanical work of horological art. Paying tribute to their heritage as one of the most important producers of marine chronometers.

What I love about the UFO is its abstract representation of life. With its three trapezoidal dials, it shows not only three time zones but for me, it also represents the past, present and future. With the hard knocks of life, the UFO architectural construction symbolises strength which one must aspire to have. To take these knocks head on but not let it knock you over.

The heart of the object with a power reserve of 365 days and in addition a dead-beat second, illustrates that with all the madness that is happening around us and with each passing second, we should be reminded that a calm mind is the ultimate weapon to life’s challenges.”

Esther, Head of Engagement Marketing (Singapore)

“I really like the new Octo Finissomo Perpetual Calendar. The Octo Finissimo has positioned Bvlgari differently in the watchmaking game and it is great to see this new addition to their line-up. The perpetual calendar is a very challenging complication to miniaturise, and they managed to grab a 6th record with their ultra-thin calibre. On top of this, the watch has everything I see myself wearing: a sleek design, low-key but knowing it has all the prowess of a perpetual calendar, a lengthy power reserve (60 hours!) and the sandblasted titanium case that is characteristic of the line, super lightweight, super versatile and genderless.”

Dana, Engagement Marketing Executive (Sydney, Australia)

“I always look forward to seeing what form watches Cartier will introduce each year, and the Cloche de Cartier, which joins their Privé Collection, is no exception. Originally introduced in 1921, it has been modernised by including a restrained anthracite grey sunburst dial and details in pink gold. Interestingly, owing to the uniqueness of the dial layout, where the 12 o’clock sits under the crown, you can wear it on the wrist, or set it down on your desk to use as a clock. It is the quirky details like this that make Cartier a standout in my book.”

David, Content Editor (Melbourne, Australia)

“Ten years ago, if you asked someone what’s the prototypical ‘NOMOS’ they’d likely say a white-dialled Tangente; with its angular lugs, restrained dial design and focus on legibility it’s easy to see why the Tangente is so embedded in the public’s consciousness of what NOMOS stand for. The Tangente – and all of NOMOS watches are contemporary manifestation of all that the Deutscher Werkbund stood for. The Club takes the iconic design elements of the Tangente and injects a bit of fun. It’s sporty yet restrained. The new Club comes in Future Orange and Absolute Grey, both with California dials (Arabic numerals on top, Roman numerals on the bottom).”

Tudor definitely lives up to its “Born to dare” motto for this year’s Fifty-Eight 925 release. Using silver for case, a traditional material rarely found in today’s crowded market, let alone in a dive watch. Combining that with an in-house Chronometer certified movement, which can be viewed through an open case back. All of this for under 5,000 USD. I couldn’t think of a better everyday piece coming out of Watches & Wonder 2021 than the Tudor Fifty-Eight 925.

Carmen, Associate Specialist (Sydney, Australia)

“The King is Back! The world’s first tool watch manufactured by a luxury watch manufacturer. Summarised all the best parts among the Explorer’s evolutions from very similar to OPs in 1953 to Mark II in 2016. The long lasting Chromalight on yellow gold hour makers creates a warmer brightness. Rolex stopped making time only watches in steel and gold for decades, it’s great to see it back. This year’s launch proofs that 36mm is classic, and class is Rolex.”
