Deconstructing the Ahoi

Ahoi there

For a brand best known for making more dressier watches, the Ahoi is proof that they know how to make one hell of a sports watch. Coming in 4 colours (blue-black pictured above), red, silver and Siren Blue (pictured below); the Ahoi can be thought of as the Tangente’s sporty cousin. Featuring a mix of curves and angles, it’s a sports watch that knows how to behave itself when paired with a suit.

NOMOS has a knack for this – evidenced by this year’s car-inspired Autobahn – the German watchmaker does a good job at making watches that fit in with your lifestyle. Just because you’ve swapped out the suit for the boardshorts doesn’t mean you have to change watches. The Ahoi Date Siren Blue features a striking Siren Blue Dial reminiscent of summer skies over the Côte d’Azur on hot August days.

Its bright dial is offset by a blue-black woven and waterproof textile strap. Designed for swimming in the sea, the woven strap was tailor-made for NOMOS in France. It’s exceptionally comfortable and works really well with the neon orange seconds hand.

Dive watches are practical watches. The Ahoi is no different. Featuring a large date window,  blue superluminova on the hands and hour indexes, and a large fuss-free dial; it’s designed to convey the time accurately and with maximum legibility.

Its stainless steel case features striking crown guards and a screw down crown, helping it achieve a water-resistance of 200 metres.

Flip the Ahoi over and you’ll come across the beautifully decorated in-house DUW5101 movement. It’s quite the sight with its tempered blue balance spring, 26 jewels, tempered blue screws and rhodium-plated surfaces with Glashütte ribbing and NOMOS perlage ratchet and duplex wheel with Glashütte sunburst finishing.

With 42 hours in the tank it’s a robust, accurate and quite independent. Tucked inside is the brands own in-house escapement, the ‘Swing System’, its a nice reminder that behind this sporty body lies some real watchmaking prowess.
