Patek Philippe Calatrava Haute Joaillerie Ref. 4899/901G

The Calatrava is one of the defining models of the Patek Philippe brand. They released the first men’s model in 1932 and the first ladies’ model several decades later. Like many ladies’ models, the ladies’ Calatrava started as a slightly modified variation of the original gent’s variation. However, it eventually evolved into a unique collection all its own. Today, the ladies’ Calatrava models boast incredible design and technical prowess. One such example is the brand’s Haute Joaillerie extension of the line.

Patek Philippe introduced the initial Calatrava Haute Joaillerie Reference 4899 in 2017. The model illustrated the brand’s expertise in the way of combining high-level gem setting with watchmaking artistry. The result was an ultra-feminine model integrating precious metal, precious stones, and engraved mother of pearl all in a soft pink colour palette.

At Baselworld 2019, Patek Philippe extended the collection with a new reference in an all-new colour way: the Calatrava Haute Joaillerie Ref. 4899/901G. The model exemplifies Patek Philippe’s continued strength in the area of women’s novelty watches. In contrast to the original Ref. 4899, this particular reference highlights a colour that remains increasingly important in the industry.

Here, we see several shades of blue on the dial, case, and strap. First, the mother-of-pearl dial showcases a delicate pale blue hue with a hand-engraved feather motif. Next, the colour scheme extends from the lower part of the dial with a mix of diamonds and blue sapphires in a snow setting. These gems seamlessly trickle into the white gold case, which is set with staggered rows of brilliant-cut diamonds and sapphires in varying blue tones. Last but not least, the lavender blue, matte alligator leather strap echoes the soft tint of the mother-of-pearl dial, complete with a gem-set buckle.

This modest, 35mm watch is set with an impressive 702 gems total, including 36 gems on the crown and 147 gems on the buckle. However, it is equally impressive inside. The Calatrava Haute Joaillerie Ref. 4899/901 houses the brand’s in-house, ultra-thin Calibre 240 self-winding mechanical movement. The model displays basic hours and minutes and boasts water resistance up to 30 metres. However, its most notable feature is a 22-karat yellow gold off-centre mini-rotor. The mechanism is frees up space and is indicative of Patek’s Philippe’s extreme attention to detail in their finishing techniques. Best of all, you can view it in all its glory through the sapphire exhibition caseback.

The Calatrava Haute Joaillerie Ref. 4899/901G epitomises Patek Philippe’s commitment to distinguishing their ladies’ collections as unique entities from their men’s. Though the model is ultra-feminine with its supple, round curves and stunning gem-setting, it does not compromise on function. The Ref. 4899/901G is equally technical with the brand’s Calibre 240 on display through the caseback. This model is proof that the marriage of form and function is no longer reserved solely for men’s models. A ladies’ collection can still display an undoubtedly feminine edge while maintaining the precision mechanics one expects from a brand like Patek Philippe.
