The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award Limited Edition

by Victor Toth

The Omega Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch” is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most iconic watches ever produced. Every die-hard watch enthusiast is familiar with Omega’s involvement in NASA’s Space Program, and how the Speedmaster was the first watch ever worn on the surface of the Moon.

Thanks to its rugged chronograph movement, high quality case and dial with excellent legibility, the Omega Speedmaster Professional was the only watch to meet NASA’s extremely demanding requirements and pass their hugely challenging tests for equipment suited to exploring space.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional was the only watch to meet NASA’s extremely demanding requirements and pass their hugely challenging tests for equipment suited to exploring space.

Before long, the Speedmaster Professional became the watch worn by astronauts in- and outside of their spaceships, as they relied on its mechanical movement to reliably keep track of time when all else failed. “Unlikely!” – you could say, but in April, 1970, a worst-case scenario unfolded, as the Apollo 13’s (the third manned mission intended to land on the Moon) crew had to overcome several major technical issues and abort their mission just two days after take-off.

The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award Limited Edition pays tribute to this “successful failure” of a mission – as commander astronaut Jim Lovell refers to it. Between 00 and 14 seconds on the chronograph scale, the dial on this limited edition piece reads “What could you do in 14 seconds?”, as a reference to a 14-second long course correction that the astronauts had to get just right as they were flying through space at incredible speeds – this life-or-death moment was timed using astronaut Jack Swigert’s Omega Speedmaster.

The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy features a luminescent Snoopy chilling in the running seconds sub-dial at the 9 o’clock position.

Omega has received the Silver Snoopy Award from NASA, an award given to those Apollo mission participants who have played an important role in ensuring the safety of the mission. Omega features the also iconic Snoopy character both on the front and back of the watch: on the dial is a luminescent drawing of Snoopy, chilling in the running seconds sub-dial at the 9 o’clock position, while on the case back, in sterling silver and hidden under a domed sapphire crystal, is an engraving of Snoopy, in recess from the dark blue backdrop reminiscent of the blue of outer space.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy Award Limited Edition is available in just 1,970 pieces ever produced, and is bound to be one of the more collectable Moonwatch iterations down the road.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo 13 Silver Snoopy highlights NASA’s connection to Snoopy and is limited to 1,970 pieces.
