Parmigiani Fleurier Presents the Tonda 1950 Special Edition Meteorite and the Tonda 1950 Gold Bracelet at Geneva Fair 2015

As Geneva Fair 2015 kicks off, Parmigiani proudly presents new variations to their signature Tonda 1950. The Tonda 1950 houses Parmigiani Fleurier’s ultra-thin PF 701 calibre, measuring 2.6 mm thick making it a true feat in the watchmaking world. The movement of the Tonda 1950 offers the finest haute horlogerie finishes you would expect from Parmigiani Fleurier, which very few brands would apply to such a mechanism. The nickel silver main plate is sand-blasted, circular-grained and then rhodium-plated. The bridges are sandblasted, drawn out or “Côte de Genève” decorated, then bevelled by hand and, finally, rhodium-plated. Also note the attractive finish of each wheel, bevelled, sunk, circular-grained on both faces, then gilded before cutting.

Tonda 1950 Special Edition Meteorite
Unpolished, irregular and fragmented – such are the characteristics of a meteorite. Yet, it is this captivating rock that forms the dial of Parmigiani Fleurier’s new special edition Tonda 1950. Available in Abyss Blue or black, these dials feature a texture whose beauty lies in the very fact that it is unpredictable; mysterious, because it is not entirely of this world.

The rapid change in temperature that the meteor rock is subjected to as it enters the atmosphere indelibly imprints its crystal structure, even if it appears homogeneous in its natural state. The rock must be treated in a series of acid baths to gradually reveal the magnificent texture born from this natural impact.

Every step involved in working with meteor rock is a delicate process. It is difficult to machine as it is harder than normal rock; as its mineral structure is unpredictable and varying, conventional working processes cannot be used. Therefore, it is only after scientific tests, and with the benefit of their experience, that master dial-makers have come up with the perfect cut and the two colour ways which the models now boasts: Abyss Blue or black.

The case of this special edition Tonda 1950 is made from titanium, a lightweight and elegant material which is particularly difficult to machine due to its in flammability. But this challenge was one which simply had to be met, as it was important that a natural element found in the periodic table – titanium, unlike platinum or gold, is not used as an alloy – was paired with something as pure and natural as a meteorite.

Tonda 1950 Gold Bracelet, a Statement of True Elegance
Parmigiani Fleurier will be combining the Tonda 1950 with a rose gold bracelet for the very first time, specially designed with proportions which reflect the model’s pure, slim lines without distracting from it this year.

The first links in this bracelet are designed to bring it in to these narrow dimensions. Starting from the generous space between the lugs, the tightly-nestled links become narrower in three successive increments on either side of the case middle until the bracelet reaches its final proportions, extending delicately and elegantly in straight links to the clasp. This slim, lightweight bracelet exudes modernity, with its understated air lending it a subtle sophistication. This ensures it fits perfectly with the simple elegance of the Tonda 1950, which gains a new brilliance from its gold showcase. The dial is available in a graphite version for men and Tahitian white mother-of-pearl with a stone-set case for women. The high standard of finish on each component is a result of the philosophy shared by the various centres of competence that make up the Parmigiani Fleurier Manufacture.

Every aspect of Tonda 1950’s movement and exterior is created in-house with painstaking care, designed to ensure each calibre showcases the very best of the Manufacture’s expertise.
