New And Easy On The Wallet – Affordable Highlights From Baselworld

One could easily be led to believe that Baselworld is only about the most complicated and expensive watches brands can produce. Fortunately the trade fair is arguably more diverse and interesting in the affordable-watch segment. Here we cherry-pick the finest novelties from hit brands Nomos, Longines, Sinn, Junghans and Tudor, which are also easy on the wallet.

Glashütte-based Nomos has made a name for itself with its consistently elegant and clean designs, but that has not kept them from livening up the Club with four fantastic new colors for 2017 while giving the watch a new, 37mm case and even adding a new movement to the range.

Silver, deep “Atlantik” blue, as well as the bold and terrific vibrant blue and red options make up the four additions to the Club Neomatik family, now powered by the DUW 3001 in-house built Nomos automatic caliber.

The case is rated to a reassuring 200m, rendering this casual-sporty offering a great all-rounder that can accompany you through the weekdays and weekend just the same.

In recent years Longines has been dedicating a lot of attention to staying true to its some 180-year history and these three new-old Flagship models serve as a powerful reminder of the established brand’s efforts.

Longines celebrates the 60th anniversary of their Flagship collection by debuting a range of three historic remakes clad in either rose or yellow gold, or stainless steel. An off-white dial, applied indices, mechanical movement and a conservative but still relevant case size of 38.5mm make the new Flagship 60th Anniversary a home-run for Longines.

The L609 automatic inside has a seconds sub-dial at six o’clock, while the hours and minutes are indicated by a pair of impeccably shaped dauphine hands. The gold cased variants will be limited to sixty pieces each while the steel version 1,957 examples.

High-tech German brand Sinn launched the EZM 12 Air Rescue, a fascinating new addition to the EZM collection that is so well-known and greatly admired among fans of the brand.

As its name implies, the EZM 12 was admittedly designed specifically by and for emergency medical services (EMS) pilots and flight medics. EZM, in case you forgot or your German is as rough as mine, stands for einsatzzeitmesser or “mission timer.”

The unusual dial layout and case features an inner rotating count-up bezel for measuring the first ten minutes after the paramedic’s arrival on scene where the patient should be treated and transported, as well as an exterior rotating countdown bezel for measuring a one hour period during which the patient should reach the hospital. Additionally a pulsometer has been integrated into the dial, reading using the four-armed seconds hand and accompanying graduated pulse scale.

The bezel can be easily removed with a small pocket knife, allowing it to be sterilised along with the 44mm Tegimented-hardened steel case. A robust watch with an equally reliable ETA 2836-2 – designed by and for professionals, and of course, also for collectors of “pro gear.”

The strong link between Junghans and minimalist Bauhaus design is demonstrated in the new Form A (where “A” stands for automatic winding), which helps further develop that strong bond between the German brand and the renowned design language.

The Form A is 39.1mm wide with an extremely thin bezel and an off-white dial, droplets of orange indices on its periphery and some stunningly thin, extra-long hands. The end result is a remarkably clean and legible timepiece that nevertheless is versatile in its appearance.

Match it to Junghans’ orange strap to make the discreet orange details pop or put it on a black one for a much more serious, elegant appearance. Powered by the J800.2 (an ETA 2824 or equivalent caliber), this automatic offering indicates the hours, minutes and seconds while the date is shown at the 3 o’clock position. A restrained but interesting wristwatch that reminds us of the adage “Form follows function”.

One of the most talked-about releases of Baselworld 2017 was Tudor’s new Heritage Black Bay Chrono but we shall maintain our focus instead on the Heritage Black Bay S&G. It is a remarkably bold, two-tone dive watch from Tudor at a highly competitive price while having everything that has rendered two-tone watches so successful as a genre.

A steel case with an 18k gold bezel, gilded hands and indices over a black dial make this one a truly timeless classic, especially when matched with the two-tone bracelet with gold middle links. Equipped with an in-house movement, the Heritage Black Bay S&G is also available with a vintage-looking, distressed leather strap with a deployant clasp for a more casual look – but you may rest assured it’s going to dress you up like few other watches can in this segment.
