Five Couples’ Watches For Valentine’s Day

by Ariel Adams

Do you find it romantic to have matching his-and-hers items? Many people do. In the world of luxury watches there are no shortage of timepieces which come in both men’s and women’s variants.

The best his and hers watches are those watches with designs so classic that a larger version looks appropriately masculine for him, and a smaller version with minor design tweaks looks appropriate for her. The challenge of course is finding a design that each half of a couple wants to wear – so it’s wise to survey the many available options. Here are a few popular choices when looking for the same style of watch but in larger and smaller variants.

Rolex Datejust
Easily the most popular model on the planet for the famed luxury brand, the Rolex Datejust also comes in a slew of variants for both men and women. While very prevalent around the world, there is perhaps no better watch family than the Datejust when looking for a truly appropriate watch for both men and women. The Datejust began as a men’s model, and today remains among the most masculine jewelry watches around, especially with the latest Datejust 41 equipped with a latest generation in-house movement. And the women’s versions in various smaller sizes – 26mm, 28mm, 31mm and 36mm – are typically decorated with embellishments such as diamonds and mother-of-pearl.

Patek Philippe Nautilus
A luxury sports watch from the 1970s that is a modern classic, the Patek Philippe Nautilus is a timepiece whose timeless design has made it more than appropriate for female adornment over the years. Patek Philippe produced a smaller version for women, the ref. 7008, which has its own unique personality, but that sits nicely next to it larger slightly more masculine counterpart, the ref. 5711. Both are best when paired with a metal bracelet, as the Nautilus was originally designed.

Hublot Big Bang
Among the men’s watches that have been transformed into feminine timepieces with interesting colors and decorations, the Big Bang is a success story because in various guises it can look incredibly masculine or incredibly feminine. Part of this is due to Hublot’s “Art of Fusion” design philosophy that uses the same basic shape but rendering it in a slew of different colors, finishes, materials, and strap choices. If you thought many of the Hublot Big Bang watches for men are wild, you should take a close look at the Big Bang watches for women that the avant-garde brand has released over the years, most notably the multi-colored Big Bang Pop Art.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
The vast majority of timepieces sold by Audemars Piguet are the Royal Oak models – and for decades since its introduction the brand has offered the Royal Oak for both men and women. While it is possible to get models for women similar to the men’s versions but smaller in size, Audemars Piguet has some unique options especially suited for feminine tastes. One example is the Royal Oak with a frosted case that makes the metal surface seemingly sparkle, achieved via a hand-hammering technique borrowed from Florentine jewelry making. For men the Royal Oak is still best when in steel and on the matching bracelet, just as the original was conceived back in 1972.

Cartier Tank
If you are looking for classicism but also variety in a pair of watches, then head over to a Cartier store and be awe-struck by the variety of Tank models. Most Cartier Tank versions (such as the Francaise, Solo, Americaine, and Anglaise) come in a variety of sizes for both men and women. It’s really just a matter of choosing the style you like, and how much you want “his” to match “hers.” For men one option is the Tank MC, which is a variation of the classic Tank Americaine, but wider and powered by an in-house movement. And for the ladies the Tank Francaise is a perennial favourite. What all Tank watches share is a long history going back almost 100 years, and the enjoyment of wearing among one of the few truly timeless non-round watch cases around.
