TAG Heuer Motor Racing Pop-Up

TAG Heuer has recently kicked off the celebrations for 50 years of the iconic ‘Monaco’. First released in 1969, the Monaco that most readily comes to mind for most of us these past few years has been the Monaco Calibre 11 “Steve McQueen” ref. CAW211P. Itself a faithful re-edition of the original Monaco, with a near-identical dial design and case construction (crown on the left and pushers on the right).

More Than Monaco

Originally founded as Uhrenmanufaktur Heuer AG by Edouard Heuer in 1860, the TAG in TAG Heuer was added in 1985 when the TAG Group (standing for Techniques d’Avant Garde) purchased a majority stake in the company. It’s why ‘TAG’ and not ‘Heuer’  is always capitalised.

True to its avant-garde naming, TAG Heuer has been pretty active in years past experimenting with new product lines, incorporating new materials into their collections and offering what were once prohibitively expensive complications at a more ‘affordable’ price.

Let’s face it, not all of us are interested in a square-shaped watch. Which is why it’s good to see TAG Heuer continue to expand it’s a lineup of watches (case in point being the Autavia introduced at Baselworld this year).

Motor Racing Pop-Up

At our TAG Heuer Motor Racing Pop-Up we’ve decided to pull together a range of interesting watches, both circular and square. The first, the TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 02T (reference. CAR5A8P.FC6415, pictured above on the right) is a fully blacked-out chronograph featuring a 45mm fine-brushed titanium black PVD coated case, carbon bezel and lugs and a black skeletonised dial with rhodium plated luminescent indexes.  Its unabashedly modern design counters the vintage aesthetic of the Monaco line of watches and is the ‘yin’ to the ‘yang’ of the Monaco.

Also worthy of a closer look, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph GMT (Reference. CBG2A1Z.BA0658), a sporty GMT Chronograph featuring a black and blue ceramic bezel, red lacquer GMT hand and a skeletonised dial. What makes this interesting is that legibility hasn’t taken a back seat despite the busy dial layout. And with 100 metres of water-resistance, the Carrera Chronograph GMT is the perfect travel watch.

As for the Pop-Up, it’s running from the 10th to the 23rd of June at VivoCity Main Atrium. Stop by to try on a range of TAG Heuer watches in the metal. While many of us get off at HarbourFront MRT station to reach Vivo, there’s always the option to drive down if you’re really getting into the Monaco 50th-anniversary swing of things.
