Emmanuelle Moureaux’s Frangipani Masterpiece

For the 2019 Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition in Singapore, Patek Philippe worked with Tokyo-based French architect/artist Emmanuelle Moureaux to create a brightly coloured installation named Majulah Singapura.

Representing the diversity of the region as well as Patek Philippe’s appreciation for artistic talent, Ms Moureaux’s orchid-inspired installation is a beautiful addition to an already incredible Exhibition.

Lights shining from above cast mesmerising pattens on the seating area underneath the installation. Combined with the gently moving paper-leaves, sitting underneath is an incredibly relaxing experience. Not too dissimilar to the feelings stirred up while sitting on a grassy patch under a lush tree canopy.

We sat down with Ms Moureaux for a quick chat, moments before the 2019 Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition opened to the public.

What was the design process like?

“The concept is an installation of one hundred colours inspired by frangipani flowers, the form is a very beautiful homage to Singapore. I also wanted to express the perfect technique of Patek Philippe craftmanship and to create something beautiful like what is seen in nature. Composed by hand, it is made up of 11,500 flowers with its petals featuring one-hundred colours.”

And how did you work with Patek Philippe on this installation?

“They gave me freedom with the concept. Because it was for the Watch Art Grand Exhibition in Singapore I wanted to be inspired by Singapore, the flowers and the colours. In Singapore you think about orchids, but I think frangipani flowers. They are very simple but vibrant and colourful. I made a series of one hundred colours installations and this is part of that series. This one is in the spirit of Majulah Singapura, it is inspired by both Singapore and Patek Philippe.”

Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition in Singapore

Running from the 28th of September until the 13th of October Patek Philippe is hosting the Watch Art Grand Exhibition at the Sands Theatre (Marina Bay Sands). Taking place during the Singapore Bicentennial year, the Grand Exhibition underlines the importance of Singapore and Southeast Asia for Patek Philippe. These markets are not only significant when it comes to the numbers of collectors and enthusiasts based in the region, they also play a major role in building an appreciation for the work of fine mechanical watchmaking. For more information click here.
