Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 4978/400G

Patek Philippe’s Calatrava is one of the most iconic and widely known models produced by the brand. The first Calatrava made its debut in 1932. After the success of the men’s collection, the brand launched a ladies’ variation several decades later. The first iterations of the ladies’ Calatrava were merely smaller and more jewellery focused versions of the men’s.

However, Patek Philippe has further distinguished the ladies’ line over the years. The modern ladies’ Calatrava collection encompasses a wide array of models that showcase the brand’s ability to combine stunning designs with technical efficiency. The Diamond Ribbon Joaillerie models are just one example of how far the ladies’ Calatrava line has come.

The first model in the Diamond Ribbon Joaillerie extension launched in 2012. The aptly named model immediately caught the attention of Calatrava fans for its distinctive design featuring ribbons of diamonds spiralling around the case. At Baselworld 2019, Patek Phillipe unveiled the latest addition to the Diamond Ribbon Joaillerie family in the form of the Calatrava Reference 4978/400G.

Like the models that came before it, the Ref. 4978/400G features the unique spiral design that is the hallmark of the model. The gem-set pattern begins on the dial with graduated diamonds spiralling from small to large toward the exterior of the white gold case. These lead to a diamond-set case, lugs, and crown, for a grand total of 770 diamonds measuring approximately 4.4 karats.

In addition, the model gets subtle blue accents with blue gold applied Arabic numeral hour markers and a striking, shiny blue alligator leather strap. The band would not be complete without additional diamond embellishments on the buckle. Still, the primary difference between previous iterations of the Diamond Ribbon Joaillerie and the Ref. 4978/400G is the size. In 2019, the model gets a modern upgrade from a 33.3mm case to a 36.5mm case.

One of the cornerstones of the Patek Philippe brand is equal attention to form and function. The detail in the design of the Ref. 4978/400G is undeniable at just a quick glance. However, it is worth a look under the hood. Inside, the model comes equipped with the brand’s in-house Calibre 240 self-winding mechanical movement. The Calibre 240 measures just 27.5mm in diameter and merely 2.53mm in height. Therefore, despite the slightly larger case size, the ultra-thin movement allows the Ref. 4978/400G to maintain its remarkably slim profile. You can view it in action through the transparent sapphire caseback. Here, you will notice the iconic 22-karat yellow gold mini-rotor that has become a signature of the Patek Philippe brand.

The latest addition to the Diamond Ribbon Joaillerie extension of the iconic Calatrava line is a sophisticated and contemporary watch designed with the modern woman in mind. Today’s discerning female watch collector desires a perfect balance of form and function. With the Ref. 4978/400G, Patek Phillipe provides just that. The model boasts breathtaking gem setting as a nod to jewellery watches past. However, it does not compromise on functionality with the power of the ultra-thin Calibre 240.
