Explaining The New Rolex 2017 Line-Up
As it has for decades, Rolex introduced its new collection of timepieces at Baselworld, the annual watch trade fair that’s the world’s largest. From the classical and elegant Datejust 41 in 904L steel, to new versions of the Yacht-Master II, here’s an overview of the Rolex watches that will reach the stores later this year.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller in 43mm
A new Sea-Dweller has been launched to mark the 50th anniversary – Much larger at 43mm, the dial bears the name Sea-Dweller in red, a reference to the first model. The new model also has a sapphire Cyclops lens, over the date with double anti-reflective coating, a feature historically absent from the Sea-Dweller. Inside, it is equipped with one of the Rolex’s latest generation movements, calibre 3235. With this model update, Rolex clearly sets the Sea-Dweller apart from the Submariner
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II
The Rolex regatta chronograph underwent a minor evolution, now enhanced by a new dial and new hand characteristic of Rolex professional models. The indexes have also been redesigned for better legibility with a red-triangle-tipped hand on a scale graduated from 10 to 0 (with markers for the half minutes); this display occupies three-quarters of the circumference of the dial. In terms of technical features, the new Yacht-Master II remains identical, with the same movement and functions.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona on Oysterflex strap
Following the Daytona in 904L steel with a ceramic bezel unveiled last year, Rolex introduced the same Cerachrom bezel on the 18ct gold versions of its racing chronograph in white, yellow and Everose gold. The luster of the gold case offers a striking contrast with the black bezel and the black chronograph counters. And Rolex also replaced the traditional leather strap with a more modern and sportier Oysterflex bracelet made of synthetic rubber that was first seen on the Yacht-Master 40.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller in Yellow Rolesor
Originally available only in solid gold (either rose, yellow or white gold), the top of the line traveller’s watch from Rolex is now available in Rolesor, making it a lot more accessible. Several versions will be available, including steel and 18ct yellow gold (which is used for the bezel, centre bracelet links and crown) as well as a version that’s almost entirely stainless steel, with only its fluted bezel in white gold, for a discrete touch of luxury.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41
After its introduction last year in Rolesor (a combination of steel and gold), the Datejust 41 is now offered entirely in stainless steel or in white Rolesor version. The technical specifications remain the same with the latest generation Rolex movement – as does the choice of a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet.
Rolex Cellini Moonphase
Rolex grows the Cellini collection of dress watches with a poetic complication, the 39 mm Cellini Moonphase. While out of place in the sportier Oyster range, the Cellini Moonphase fits perfectly in the Cellini line. Its white lacquer dial with a blue enamelled disc at 6 o’clock showing the full moon and the new moon, the former depicted by a meteorite applique and the latter by a silver ring. The Cellini Moonphase is available in Everose gold and is fitted on a brown alligator leather strap.
