5 Red Watches To Usher In The Lunar New Year

by Aaron De Silva

We’ve barely recovered from the rollercoaster ride that is SIHH when the Lunar New Year is already upon us. Traditionally, the holiday calls for a plethora of red or gold elements – whether it’s in the festive decorations that ornament the home or in the clothing and accessories worn during the period – to herald good fortune. Luckily for watch lovers, there’s no shortage of timepieces that display those key colours, including those cased in red gold – that’s killing two birds with one stone. Here are five of the most auspicious watches you can strap on for the festivities.

Rolex Sky-Dweller
Rolex first introduced the ingenious Sky-Dweller in 2012, and then released new variations two years after that. This stunning Everose gold edition on an Oyster bracelet is part of the latter wave, with Everose being a patented, fade-proof red gold alloy. The bi-directional rotating bezel is used to adjust the local time in one-hour jumps, both forwards and backwards. Then there’s the month indication, which, uniquely, is represented by a flash of red that appears in the aperture above the Roman numerals for the hours – June is at six o’clock, December is 12 o’clock and so on.

The lustre of Everose gold exerts a magnetic pull in this scintillating Sky-Dweller model.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar
In 2015, Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar – first unveiled in 1984 – underwent a makeover. The new reference is housed in a case that’s slightly wider at 41 mm compared to its 39 mm predecessor, but retaining the classic octagonal look. To fill out these new dimensions, the watchmakers designed a new movement, calibre 5134, based on the older workhorse, the ultra-thin calibre 2120. The dial layout remains largely unchanged, though legibility has been improved. Probably the most significant addition is the calendar week indication on the flange – useful for finance executives.

The new Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, pictured here in rose gold with a silver-toned dial, is 2mm larger than its ancestor and boasts a new movement.

Hublot Big Bang Unico Retrograde Chronograph Kobe “Vino” Bryant

The second collaboration between Hublot and basketball star Kobe Bryant, this audacious timepiece pays tribute to the basketball star in a number of ways. The first and most obvious is the basketball motif on the dial; the second is the rich, deep Burgundy colour of the dial and snakeskin strap, a nod to Bryant’s nickname, “Vino”, a reference to the 37-year old getting better with age. Lastly, the retrograde chronograph mechanism is designed to measure timings of up to 48 minutes – the duration of a basketball game – plus overtime.

Limited to 100 pieces, this Big Bang Unico edition dedicated to Kobe Bryant combines the warmth of Hublot’s proprietary King Gold with the richness of Burgundy tones.

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch “First Omega in Space”
You can’t quite go wrong with a Moonwatch, particularly an edition that pays homage to the “First Omega in Space”, equipped with the traditional, manual-winding movement calibre 1861. This handsome model is even more special given that it’s cased in Omega’s Sedna gold, a proprietary rose gold alloy made of gold, copper and palladium that does not fade with time, unlike ordinary rose gold. Rich brown tones on the ceramic bezel, sub-dials and leather strap provide contrast.

Introduced in 2012, the “First OMEGA in Space” Moonwatch now comes in a dashing Sedna gold-and-brown combo.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Rendez-Vous Celestial

There could hardly be a more suitable watch for the Lunar New Year than Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Rendez-Vous Celestial, with its deep red aventurine dial, pink gold case and crimson alligator strap. The smattering of diamonds on the bezel and dial lends a festive glitter, almost like fireworks in the night sky. And speaking of night sky, the dial bears a sky chart that displays the constellations and Zodiac signs – albeit of the Western, not Chinese, variety.

Dressed in a full festive getup of red and gold, the Rendez-Vous Celestial is bound to endow good fortune upon the wearer.
