Ulysse Nardin Celebrates The Ocean Race with a New Innovative Diver
In January this year, Ulysse Nardin was confirmed as the Official Timing Partner for The Ocean Race 2022-23. The latest Diver celebrates the “The Ocean Race” with a sustainability focus.
With 7 months to go before the start of The Ocean Race in Alicante, Spain, Ulysse Nardin has released a new Diver, which will be the official timekeeper for the open-sea sailing race.
The new Diver “The Ocean Race” is based on the Diver Net, a concept watch from 2020. The Ocean Race Diver embodies the shared commitment of Ulysse Nardin and The Ocean Race to the responsible use and conservation of the world’s oceans. The environmentally friendly watch creation uses innovative alternate materials.
A Case of Innovation
First, the case. The side case and case back of the new Diver is made from a new composite of 40% Carbonium and 60% Nylo, a polyamide material from a French startup, FIL&FAB, that is made from recycled fishing nets. As for the steel case components, Ulysse Nardin has sourced this from Voestalpine Boehler, an Austrian steelwork. 80-85% of the steel used in The Ocean Race Diver is recycled from the automotive industry.
The unidirectional concave rotating bezel on The Ocean Race Diver is also made from Carbonium. In 2019, Ulysse Nardin was the first watchmaking brand to use this material in a watch. This innovative material by Lavoisier Composites is sourced entirely from the French aerospace transformation sector. Composed of two thirds intermediate modulus carbon fibre and one third high-temperature epoxy, it is 40% lighter than aluminium. The resulting product has optimum moulding and machining characteristics, with ideal strength and stiffness profiles.
The discrete yet distinct dial is surface treated with a neutral textured anthracite (ruthenium), and stamped with the iconic double X, punctuated with green Super-Luminova. Two subdials, one at 12 o’clock and another at 6 o’clock, show the power reserve and seconds respectively. An aperture at 6 o’clock shows the date.
Manufacture Movement with Recycled Materials
Housed within is the UN-118 manufacture movement. This iconic movement utilises cutting-edge silicone technology pioneered by Ulysse Nardin, with its DiamonSil escapement and silicium hairspring. 95% of the materials for the movement components are sourced within a 30km radius of the manufacture. Half of these come from recycling channels, and 100% recycled brass is used in Ulysse Nardin movements.
Taking Upcycling to New Levels
The Ocean Race Diver comes on woven straps with scratch closing. The yarn, made by JTTI-France, is composed of 100% recycled fishing nets. Each of the 200 limited edition Diver is packaged in a specially designed pouch made of R-PET. It also comes with a Helly Hanson dry bag recycled from the sea.
