Hublot Unveils The Big Bang Unico SORAI

World Rhino Day

We recently spoke about Hublot’s new partner with Kevin Pietersen and SORAI (Save Our Rhinos Africa and India) to help put an end to poaching (read here). Marking this occasion – and in tandem with world Rhino Day, Hublot unveiled the Big Bang Unico SORAI on the 22nd of September. Limited to 100, a large proportion of the funds raised through selling each watch will be directly paid to Care for Wild for the care and conservation of orphaned baby rhinoceroses, and to the South African National Parks agency to reinforce their nocturnal surveillance capabilities using airborne thermal intelligence tools.

The Big Bang comes in Magic Gold, titanium and sapphire (to list a few). But, there’s something to be said for the understated beige micro-blasted ceramic case found on the Big Bang SORAI. Its mat beige skeleton dial features a geometric Rhino motif within the running seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, not too dissimilar to the aesthetic found on the Hublot Classic Fusion Orlinski.

Beige Ceramic

Beige lacquered appliqués with white luminescent provide contrast without overwhelming the more subdued aesthetic of the watch. The 60-minute counter at 3 o’clock is coloured in beige barring for a segment to display the date – which is also skeletonise, as evident by the visible date ring encircling the dial in the space between the hour markers and the beige minute track.

Camouflage Rubber Strap

Pared with both a beige nato-style bracelet and a camouflage rubber-lined strap. The rubber-strap is interesting in that it takes on the appearance of fabric. Already a pioneer in pairing rubber straps with high-end watchmaking, Hublot have upped themselves once again by implementing an advanced vulcanisation technology that allows them to draw patterns accurate to a tenth of a millimetre. And unlike fabric, vulcanised patterns are more resistant and durable to daily wear. Be that in the office, or in the middle of the Kruger national park.

HUB1242

Water resistant to 100 metres and with a power-reserve of 72 hours, the Hublot Big Bang SORAI houses the Hublot HUB1242 UNICO Manufacture self-winding chronograph movement. Featuring an automatic flyback chronograph with column wheel and double clutch visible on the dial side. It beats at 28,800 beats per hour and has 38-jewels.
