Affordable Yet Desirable Mechanical Watches For Christmas 2016

by Ariel Adams

Watches have made excellent gifts for as long as anyone can remember. Serving as jewelry and style accessory, watches are also among the few accessories that men can get away with wearing. With that said, many watches, especially quality mechanical ones, can be very expensive. For that reason let’s look at a few accessible mechanical watches that will serve as valued gift for anyone who is lucky enough to receive one.

Tudor Pelagos Blue
Now with an in-house movement, the cult-favorite Tudor Pelagos also comes with a blue dial in addition to the more conservative black one. The all titanium 42mm case is a testament to modern yet traditional tool watch design, and each Pelagos comes with a host of appreciated extras such as a ceramic bezel insert and spring-loaded, micro-adjustment on the bracelet. It offers a great deal for the money compared to the competition, and an easy classic look while not looking vintage right out of the box.

Junghans Meister Pilot
Many of the world’s most famous historic military pilot watches were produced in Germany, and some of those same companies still make pilot watches today. Junghans takes a slightly different approach with a bit more modern in their take on the timepiece. The Junghans Meister Pilot is a highly-curated modern take on a 1950s watch Junghans produced for the West German air force. It is beautiful and combines just enough art as it does refined retro appeal. The 43.3mm wide steel case has a bi-directional elapsed time bezel and the sapphire crystal over the dial is domed in a manner meant to suggest the look of vintage aviator’s watches. Inside the watch is a Swiss automatic chronograph movement.

Longines Heritage 1935
Longines has a rich history full of many interesting watch designs that the company today liberally borrows from to make brand new timepieces. Yes, it is a bit of a cheat when it comes to original design, but sometimes it is difficult to argue with the results. The formula is simple, find an elegant, functional watch from the past, and make it again in a larger size suited for modern tastes with modern materials and construction. One such example of this is the Longines Heritage 1935, which celebrates a military watch made for Czech air force in the 1930s. The polished steel, cushion-shaped case is easily the watch’s most distinct feature, while the movement inside is an ETA automatic. The dial is lovely and easy to read, with the very vintage military charm that is popular today.

Nomos Ahoi Atlantik
Bauhaus and minimal, brands like Glashutte-based Nomos aren’t what you think of when you think of sport watches. The popular affordably-minded brand that makes their own movements does in fact have a sport watch, and it is the demure-looking Ahoi, which is technically a dive watch. At 40mm wide, stainless steel with 200m of water resistance, it is timepiece that’s considered massive in size for the brand that makes many 35mm men’s watches (although it is quite moderately sized compared to many of today’s other watch offerings). That is just the way Nomos fans like it though. The simple elegance of the minimalist look values legibility and proportions, as well as colors optimal for legibility. The Ahoi Atlantik comes with a dark gray face and gold-toned our markers, and a spiffy, in-house automatic movement.

Montblanc 4810 Day-Date
Easily the strongest area for Montblanc has been contemporary dress and formal watches. From the Star to the Meisterstuck, Montblanc timepieces have been a uniquely elegant way of saying “I mean business.” For that reason they tend to make great gifts. The Montblack 4810 Day-Date is clearly more modern in its appeal with clean lines and a clean bracelet, but it is meant to go just as well with a suit. The gold-toned hands and hour markers hint just a bit at the ambitions of the wearer. At 40.5mm wide in steel (available on a matching bracelet or leather strap) the watch indicates the time, day, and date.
