TAG Heuer Manchester United Special Editions

Tag Heuer & Manchester United F.C

Manchester United Football Club belongs to that rare cadre of sports teams, that is both recognised the world over and is synonymous with success. It’s up there with the likes of the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls and New Zealand’s All Blacks in terms of worldwide brand recognition and number of supporters. For Manchester United, it’s a multigenerational affair, with the team displaying early signs of brilliance over a century ago.

Since turning professional in 1885 and joining the Football League in 1892, the club has faced a number of setbacks including a brush with bankruptcy in 1901, German bombing and plane crash. Nevertheless, Manchester United endured each challenge and went on to win 13 Premier League titles (unsurpassed by any other) and won the highest number of English top-flight titles (20). Manchester United’s partnership with Tag Heuer is a fitting choice then, considering the watch manufacture’s “Don’t Crack Under Pressure” campaign. In celebration of the third season of being the Official Timekeeper of Manchester United, Tag Heur has released a number of Limited Edition Manchester United watches.

Don’t Crack

After turning professional in 1885 and joining the Football League in 1892 Manchester United had a rocky start after enduring a brush with bankruptcy in 1901. But success came early, with the club winning the First Division Championship in both 1908 and 1911. Tough times soon followed as the club almost faded into obscurity during the war. It didn’t help that the clubs Old Trafford grounds were heavily damaged by German bombing raids during WWII.

After the war the team literally had to rebuild itself, both its team and its home ground were in tatters. Matt Busby did exactly that as manager of the club. Himself a leading pre-war player, he broke down the old ways of running a club and ushered in a new era of football management. His influence was almost immediate with the club winning the FA Cup in 1948. Off the back of its success, the club was able to rebuild Old Trafford.

Into the 50’s Busby went about building up a young team. Despite their relative inexperience, the club had almost immediate success winning the League back to back in 1956 and 1957. But unfortunately on the clubs return from playing Belgrade in the European Cup, their plane crashed after trying to take off in a blizzard. 23 passengers died, including 8 teammates, with Busby only just surviving his extensive injuries. It was a devastating blow to not only the club but also to the international football community.

Busby eventually made a recovery and remarkably rebuilt the team once again to win perhaps its most remarkable comeback, the 1968 European Cup. After his retirement, however, the club hit a rough patch as it came up against the “Liverpool Era”. However, its reputation, history of success and unwavering dedication all helped the club ride out the tough times. By the 90’s Manchester United was back to its winning habits and since has cemented its position as one of the most successful sporting teams in the world.

Manchester United Special Editions

To mark Manchester United’s tour of the U.S and the upcoming English Premier Season, Tag Heuer has unveiled two limited edition watches, both sporting the distinctive colours of the iconic football club. The Carrera Heuer 01 features a 43 mm steel case on a bright perforated red rubber strap. Its brushed and plated black gold dial is partially open-worked and displays the iconic Manchester United logo on the silver small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. Chronograph minute and hour counters are located at 12 and 6 o’clock respectively. Numerals are rhodium-plated with white SuperLuminova®, so too are the polished and faceted hour and minute hands (filled with red SuperLuminova®) and indexes. The lacquered red central seconds hand pops and give off a great contrast against the dial. There’s also a date window at 3:30. Its domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, in conjunction with the red seconds hand and ample use of SuperLuminova® make this watch highly legible despite its apparent visual complexity. The Carrera Heuer 01 is water-resistant to 100 metres and houses the Calibre Heuer 01 Automatic movement.

The second model is the 43 mm TAG Heuer Formula 1 chronograph. Featuring a notched steel bezel with a tachymeter scale. The red lacquer 12 o’clock Arabic numeral and Manchester United logo positioned on the counter at 6 o’clock contrasts with the opaline anthracite dial.

The date window is positioned at 4 o’clock on a black disc. The Manchester United logo is also found engraved on the screw-down case back. It comes on a perforated black rubber strap which is sporty yet versatile enough to go well with just about any outfit, on or off the pitch. And with a water-resistance of 200 metres, you’ll be able to walk off the pitch and take a dip in the pool without taking your watch off. It’s a great all-around watch for fans of Manchester United.
