Sinn x The Hour Glass

Known amongst collectors for their tool watches, Sinn – founded in 1961 by Helmut Sinn, remains one of the last independent watchmakers in the industry. The brand has been successful in carving out a niche for tool watches, namely chronographs and diving watches; often featuring technology such as reflection-free diving dials, submarine-steel watches, air-dehumidifying technology and lubricant-free anchor escapements.

In collaborating with Sinn, we chose the Sinn 356 – a classic flieger with a domed acrylic crystal and a tri-compax chronograph dial arrangement. Its 38.5 mm bead-blasted steel case measures in at 15.5 mm thick, partly attributable to the domed acrylic crystal and the screw-down case back.

Despite its relatively modest proportions, the Sinn Flieger packs an information rich dial: at three o’clock there’s a day of the week and a date aperture with ‘Sinn’ printed above and ‘Flieger’ printed below in white font. Matching the white minute track encircling the dial.

Arabic hour markers (found at 1,2,4,5,7,8,10 and 11 o’clock) are printed in a blocky luminescent-filled font. Syringe-style white hour and minute hands are also lume-filled, so too is the lollipop-style diamond-tipped central chronograph hand.

Unlike the austere monochromatic palette normally found on the Sinn 356, we’ve opted for a distressed ‘vintage’ brown dial. The exposed brass baseplate shines through an erratically distressed dial, resulting in a sort of perfect imperfection. The effect is reminiscent of kintsugi – the art finding beauty in the imperfect by repairing broken pottery with golden adhesive.

It is particularly striking on, and around each of the three sub-dials, resulting in an alternating coloured snailed finish. Each sub-dial appears radiant thanks to the exposed underlay shinning through. As for the dial layout: a 12 hour counter and a 3o minute counter are located at 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock respectively. Running seconds sub-dial, with a red running seconds hand, is found at the 9 o’clock position.

The Sinn x The Hour Glass Commemorative Edition houses the SW500 Calibre. Running at 4 Hz with 25-jewels, the self-winding automatic movement is water-resistant to 10 bar, anti-magnetic and shock-resistant. Making it an excellent daily companion, a true tool watch in every sense of the word.

Coming on a textured brown suede calf strap with beige stitching and a steel buckle (adorned with the Sinn logo). Also featuring 20 mm drilled-lugs, making any future strap changes both easy to source and easy to change out.

The Sinn x The Hour Glass Commemorative Edition features a numbered case-back and is limited to 100. Now available in Singapore and Malaysia (View here). For more photos, see below.
