Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Why Rolex’s latest Cosmograph Daytona is the hottest release of the year.
At the largest annual watch fair, Baselworld, industry experts and collectors around the world gasped when the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in stainless steel was relaunched. The orders flooded in and a waiting list started just hours after the release. This is a trade fair with 1,500 exhibited brands, where thousands of watches are released. How did a stainless steel chronograph watch with a ceramic bezel capture hearts and minds over all the other amazing timepieces released?
An accumulation of Rolex’s best
The newly released reference 116500 is an accumulation of the most sought after details that collectors look for in a vintage Daytona: the black bezel is reminiscent of the black Plexiglass bezel of the reference 6240, the red Daytona signature above the 6 o’clock subdial a homage to the reference 6263 (also known as the Paul Newman Daytona). This is a reminder to the heritage and history of the Daytona, the evolution of which is so subtle that the modern and vintage renditions are still visually similar.
Practical innovations
Rolex takes its time to ensure that new innovations are practical and that they contribute to the durability and functionality of the watch. After all, the brand is known for their tool watches. A Cerachrom bezel replaces the former metal bezel, a scratch-resistant ceramic invulnerable to UV light and salt water. All packaged into a neat 40mm case, which is eminently wearable for both men and women –the new Cosmograph Daytona is a watch made to be worn, used and enjoyed.
The quest to enhance accuracy
The Swiss brand is so confident that it has certified this model to be a Superlative Chronometer, which is a promise of higher accuracy, bringing the tolerance accuracy rate down to -2/+2 seconds per day. To put this in perspective, only 3% of the total Swiss production of watches are Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC) certified, and that certification has a standard tolerance accuracy rate of -4/+6. To add the icing on the cake, Rolex watches now carry a manufacture warranty of 5 years.
In the relaunch of the Cosmograph Daytona, Rolex has produced a new icon for years to come.
