Toys For Boys – 4 Fun Watches Designed For Non-Conformists

by Low Ka Wei

There is a time and place for serious workhorse timepieces, and there is another for those that offer some fun. Whether you desire a soupçon of the latter – merely sufficient to entice a passer-by to steal a second glance at your wrist – or an entire dollop for card-carrying, unabashed attention whores, there is certainly one within our four picks that will whet your horological appetite.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air-King
One of the most staid watchmakers in the business has thrown up quite a few surprises in recent memory – enough, in fact, that we are seriously considering whether to continue applying that adjective to Rolex – and here is a prime example. A revival of an old badge, the aviator-destined Air-King boasts a dial unlike any other Rolex, with huge markers explicitly spelling out the minutes except at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. Even the Rolex branding is not spared the outlandish treatment, with the trademark crown printed in yellow and the signature in green. Certainly, this is not your uncle’s Rolex…

MB&F LM1 Silberstein
While quirky watchmaker Alain Silberstein’s eponymous brand is sadly no more, his designs live on in collaborations such as this one, the MB&F LM1 Silberstein. The extensive makeover features the Frenchman’s distinctive aesthetic, with bold, primary colours and geometric forms boldly turning what was originally a classical look into something right out of the Bauhaus era. Other small details make this one a winner, like the sub-dials, made concave to contrast with the strongly convex shape of the sapphire crystal dome, and the outsized screws that hold down the balance wheel bridge.

Urwerk EMC Time Hunter
There is so much to love about this watch. Being completely superficial, our first reason is the fabulous olive drab ceramic-coat colour option; few can pull off the G.I. Joe chic with similar aplomb. Then there is alluringly geeky EMC function, which uses electronics (gasp!) powered by a hand-operated crank (phew!) to allow owners to regulate the watch via a screw, without the need to send it back to the factory. For those who have served in the military, the chunky aesthetics and starkly marked dials will certainly bring back bittersweet memories of signal sets and other army paraphernalia.

Richard Mille RM 69 Erotic Tourbillon
The ultimate plaything for billionaires, the sort who can make passes at women (or men, if those who swing that way) without being called out for it. The party trick is the “oracle”, a set of three rollers that dispenses, on demand, saucy messages such as “I long to explore your lips” or “I lust to caress your body”, should you run out of pickup lines after a long night out. Whether you think the messaging is frivolous or not, do consider that this complication is indeed a significant one, requiring 505 components and the expertise of the renowned Renaud & Papi to conceptualise.
