by Frank Geelen

2015 is about to come to an end, and soon we will be treated to more novelties during the upcoming watch fairs: SIHH in Geneva and then Baselworld. So it’s fitting to have a look at what the past year offered us, with the top ten watches of 2015.

Clé de Cartier
The Clé de Cartier defines the new classic watch from the maison, a watch that is made in the same vein as its other icons, like the Tank or the Santos. The Clé de Cartier is made to be a timeless classic, which can be worn in every situation. And it’s not just a new look, because the Clé features Cartier’s brand new in-house movement, the 1847 MC.

Girard-Perregaux Tourbillon Minute Repeater
A skeletonized movement, exquisite finishing, large tourbillon regulator and a superb minute repeater chimes – the latest Girard-Perregaux grand complication is the definition of pure haute horlogerie. It feels like Girard-Perregaux brought together the best of two worlds: a modern execution of the complications and traditional hand-finishing, complete with the usual and very desirable golden bridge for the tourbillon that is the brand’s signature.

Laurent Ferrier Galet Square
Discreet in style and colour, the Galet Square is a watch for true connoisseurs. However, don’t be fooled by its conservative looks as it is equipped with one of the best-finished movements on the market, and some novel technical features that promise superior timekeeping. All in all, a superb looking timepiece with an understated feel; and a great pleasure for collectors.

Hublot Big Bang Alarm Repeater
For the 10th anniversary of this iconic model, Hublot created a new alarm watch with a dial that distinguishes it from the rest of the collection.  More importantly the Big Bang Alarm Repeater features new complications never seen before at Hublot: a second time-zone, a day-night indicator and an alarm mechanism.  Equipped with a hammer like a minute repeater, the alarm is crystal clear and pleasing in tone.  With the Big Bang Alarm Repeater, Hublot has created the perfect watch for frequent business travellers that always need to be right on time.

Omega Globemaster
Under the hood of this classical and vintage-inspired dress watch ticks one of the most innovative movements of the decade, the new METAS-certified, antimagnetic Master Chronometer. With the METAS timekeeping certification performed by an independent Swiss institute, this watch sets a new milestone in the industry with its record-setting antimagnetic resistance. And it also looks fantastic on the wrist with its fluted bezel and modest 39 mm case.

Rolex Yacht-Master Everose
The combination of materials – rose gold, black ceramic and rubber – might sound familiar but this is Rolex, and when they decide to go with the trend of mixing materials, the result is high quality.  The rubber strap alone is a masterpiece of comfort and engineering: soft, flexible and robust all at the same time.  Rolex becomes more fashionable with the new Yacht-Master but the overall look remains resolutely elegant and certainly defines a new look for the brand.

Patek Philippe Ref. 5370 Split Seconds Chronograph
This is the most beautiful testimony to its heritage that Patek could have done for its collectors, a watch that represents everything a Patek should be. It is precious, with platinum case featuring superb detailing; complicated and equipped with a rattrapante chronograph and a new in-house movement); superb with its black enamel dial. And importantly, the design harks back to some of the rarest vintage watches made by Patek Philippe. In one sense it’s a back to basics watch, and one that will definitely become collectible.

Tudor Heritage Black Bay Black
Finally, the Tudor diver that collectors were expecting. The Black Bay was already very cool with its burgundy or a blue bezel. Now it has grown more accomplished and mature with a black insert and a red triangle, that together contrast nicely with the gold hands and inscriptions. This edition combines in a single watch all the attributes of vintage Tudor watches, while still retaining Tudor’s quality and accessible price.

Vacheron Constantin Harmony Chronograph Calibre 3300
After A. Lange & Söhne and Patek Philippe each introduced their own chronograph movements, Vacheron Constantin took its turn with the manufacture chronograph movement calibre 3300.
