2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Parmigiani Fleurier. The brand was born from the trust woven between Michel Parmigiani and the Sandoz Family Foundation who have acknowledged his talent as a watchmaker. The brand proudly unveils its newest collection of novelties that once again showcases Parmigiani’s technical expertise in watchmaking. Today the brand totals 33 movements manufactured within its watchmaking centre. This is more accomplishments in 20 years than certain brands reach in a century. Parmigiani Fleurier is not done creating, surprising and glorifying watchmaking art.
TONDA CHRONOR ANNIVERSAIRE: PARMIGIANI FLEURIER’S FIRST INTEGRATED CHRONOGRAPH
To mark its 20th anniversary, Parmigiani Fleurier is unveiling the Tonda Chronor Anniversaire, its new integrated chronograph movement, a feat of watchmaking that very few of today’s manufactures are capable of achieving. With its first Anniversary model featuring a gold movement, Parmigiani Fleurier pays tribute to the tradition of the chronograph.
“Since the very start of our watchmaking adventure, the idea of creating an integrated Chronograph has always been close to my heart. This dream became a reality on the eve of our 20th anniversary, and this is no coincidence – it is a reflection of our development as a manufacture. To successfully create an integrated chronograph, one must first master its imposing, meticulous assembly of constituent parts; not just their manufacture, but also their operation and function at the heart of a calibre; one must appreciate both their limits and potential. For this reason, an integrated chronograph is necessarily the work of an experienced manufacture. The Tonda Chronor Anniversaire is a reflection of 20 years of work,” says Mr Michel Parmigiani, Founder and Master Watchmaker of Parmigiani
An integrated chronograph is the Holy Grail for a watch manufacture, as it is one of the complications requiring the most skill to create on an industrial scale. The chronograph relies on kinematics with a chain of actions, each one determining and triggering the next, and each sequence precisely synchronised and adjusted. Even the tiniest imperfection has a knock-on effect, travelling down the line like a series of dominoes, disrupting the entire movement.
Prestigious, requiring technical excellence, the integrated chronograph says a great deal about the potential of Parmigiani Fleurier’s manufacture. It harks back to the watchmaking expertise that enabled its creation; it reminds us that a manufacturing process is truly exceptional when it employs years of accumulated knowledge. It paves the way towards an era when the watchmaker, the technician and the craftsman walk side by side.
TONDA MÉTROPOLITAINE SÉLENE
Mysterious and captivating, the moon takes pride of place in the Métro collection.
In presenting the Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène, Parmigiani Fleurier is dedicating a ladies’ piece to the depiction of the moon phases, and at the same time adding a new movement entirely produced in its workshops to its range.
The moon phase module was entirely produced in the Parmigiani Fleurier workshops. Its operating principle is based on a gear connected to the hour wheel, which has twice as many teeth and therefore turns twice as slowly. This gear performs one rotation every 24 hours and drives the moon disc forward every day using a flexible blade integrated into its wheel.
The Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène is impressive in terms of its technical features and accuracy, but also possesses a unique artisanal beauty, resulting from the continuous decorative care responsible for its preciousness. These operations are carried out by hand, never substituted, giving it a perceptible and unique value.
The real tour de force and source of this piece’s originality stems from the floral pattern decorating the dial and increasing the intrinsic femininity of this complication. The lotus flower, depicted at the heart of the piece, is a plant that blooms at night when the moon rises. In some cultures, it is said that this flower is the symbol of the female gait, as every step a woman takes produces a lotus flower. Two versions of the dial has been unveiled – a white mother-of-pearl, which forms the base of the dial as well as the lotus. The second presents the Parmigiani Fleurier signature abyss blue dial, which is joined by a lotus of the same colour, matching the exact same shade.
