GPHG Coming to Sydney & Bangkok

Anyone familiar with Singapore can attest to its phenomenally strong watch culture. From Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Hublot to lesser-known independent watchmakers; Singaporeans love affair with watches runs deep. For many local collectors they’re often the second, third or even fourth generation of watch collectors in their family. It’s a theme that’ll likely be explored during the upcoming Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition in Singapore.

Watch Culture Down Under

Also in late September, the GPHG is making its first visit to Australia. Since 2001, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) has celebrated the best of Swiss watchmaking. Likened to the Oscars of watches, the GPHG was conceived to highlight excellence in watchmaking and to promote horological appreciation the world over. Its first stop in 2019 is at The Hour Glass Sydney boutique, kicking things off with a private opening cocktail on the 27th of September. Followed by an open to the public exhibition on the 28th and 29th of September.

It’s a boon for the local watch collecting scene which is rapidly growing to become one of the most sophisticated and varied in the region. Including collectors and makers by the likes of Firmin, Ida and Johan (read more on their blog: Remontoire) and Daniel Yong in Sydney to independent Reuben Shoots in Canberra, making watches according to the Daniels method.

Next Stop Bangkok

Shortly after taking off from Sydney, the GPHG will make its next stop at PMT The Hour Glass in Bangkok. Capping off an incredible year for the Thai collecting community. Earlier this year, PMT The Hour Glass opened a Patek Philippe boutique at the iconic ICONSIAM, located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. President of Patek Philippe, Thierry Stern, was in attendance for the grand opening alongside both young watch enthusiasts and seasoned collectors. An event which highlighted the diversity and the passion of the Thai watch collecting community. For the GPHG, an opening ceremony will take place on the 3rd of October followed by a public exhibition on the 4th and 5th of October.
