Trilobe Unveils Ombre & Lumière for its Nuit Fantastique Collection

It’s only been six years since Trilobe debuted in the watchmaking world with its innovative creations that have a new way of telling time. Despite only being around since 2018, the young French watchmaker already has a handful of different collections that have set the world ablaze. One of its more popular collections is the Nuit Fantastique, which Trilobe has since introduced two new shades in Ombre and Lumière.

Translating to ‘fantastic night’ in French, the Nuit Fantastique series was only the second collection to be introduced by Trilobe. It has since had 15 different variations of the Nuit Fantastique with Ombre and Lumière being the latest additions. This was the same collection of watches that earned a preselection during GPHG 2021 in the ‘Petite Aiguille’ category. However, Trilobe didn’t win that year but took home the main prize at GPHG 2022 in the same category with a later version of the Nuit Fantastique.

Trilobe Fantastique Nuit Collection

The watch doesn’t feature any hour or minute hands and instead, focuses on its three iconic rings to tell time.

Before Trilobe introduced both the Ombre and Lumière variants of its Fantastique Nuit, the latest of the collection was Brume, which came out last year. For 2024, Trilobe now adds to new colourways to the Fantastique Nuit collection with the inclusion of Ombre and Lumière. Both editions pay tribute to the ambivalence of Trilobe’s designs, being audacious and timeless with its new monochromatic shades of black and white.

The inspiration behind the new colourways stems from Trilobe’s exploration of the Art Brut (Outsider Art) movement. Pioneered by French painter and sculptor Jean Dubuffet, who liked to transgress norms while challenging classical representations and disrupting the culture during his period. His work was known to create tension and energy through the interplay of juxtaposed colours, which allowed light to emerge from the shadows.

This is evident with the Nuit Fantastique Ombre and Lumière as both watches feature a black-and-white dial in contrasting duality. This helps to emphasise the Maison’s unique display, embodied by its three iconic rings for the hours, minutes, and seconds. The Ombre has a blacked-out dial with white sub-dials while the Lumière sits at the other end of the spectrum with a white dial and black sub-dials.

Within the Fantastique Nuit

Trilobe
Both the Nuit Fantastique Ombre and Lumiere come in two sizes: 40.5 mm or 38.5 mm.

Trilobe’s unique concept and design favours minimalism whilst playing with a wearer’s perception of time. Unlike conventional classic watches, the Trilobe Fantastique Nuit ensures time moves in a continuous flow. The watch features three rotating hands with the largest ring focusing on the hours that turn counterclockwise. The minutes wheel appears within an aperture, which rests directly above the seconds wheel that alternates between a Clous de Paris and an azured ring.

Taking a page out of its other variants, both the Ombre and Lumière Nuit Fantastique pieces will feature the same grained dial. This time, however, it will be in solid black or white. The main section of the dial will feature a predominantly white/black shade with its sub-dials being of the other opposing shade to give off contrasting textures. But it is what’s powering the Trilobe Nuit Fantastique that truly makes it tick.

At the heart of the watch rests the X-Centric self-winding integrated mechanical movement with a micro-rotor. This automatic movement was developed in Switzerland and was made exclusively for Trilobe, who utilises it for all of its watches. Being exceptionally slim at only 5.78 mm, the micro-rotor movement is able to combine finesse with technical performance to bring refinement and modernity to the collection.

The entire case of the watch is made of grade 5 titanium to go with a domed bezel that features a sapphire crystal alongside multi-layered, anti-reflective treatment. The case back also houses a similar anti-reflective sapphire glass to give you a clearer look at the movement. On the surface of the watch, you’ll notice a mixture between mirror-polished and satin-brushed treatments for greater complexity.

Finishing Touches

Both the Trilobe Ombre and Lumière Nuit Fantastique watches have a power reserve of 48 hours alongside a 50 m water resistance level. The right-hand side of the watch features a push button crown and holding it all together is a black alligator leather strap with a titanium pin buckle.
